Pinnacle Studio Ultimate Collection V14 Review

Pinnacle Studio Ultimate Collection V14
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my third iteration of Pinnacle Studio, having owned versions 11 and 12 as well. I also own and have used several other video editing packages running from high to low end. At the top of the low end range, Pinnacle Studio Ultimate Collection 14 comes in as a solid five-star performer - if you are willing to tolerate some minor stability issues. For reasons I don't pretend to understand, all video editing programs seem to have stability issues to one degree or another. Sometimes I think I may be part of the problem as I rush ahead performing other operations while the CPU is still rendering what I've already done. Other times, I just plain don't know: like Adobe Premiere Elements 7 simply not running on a Vista 32-bit system while it ran on a 64-bit version without problems. Given time, I could probably narrow down the issues, but I'm not that concerned. With Pinnacle, I am politely informed that the program has malfunctioned and given an option to close the program. Do that, restart Pinnacle and I'm back in business within a few seconds. Do frequent saves and the occasional crashes don't hurt.

Pinnacle runs about a 12 month cycle between new major releases. Frankly, every other release could probably be skipped because the improvements are not generally that earthshaking.

I am glad, however, that I upgraded to Version 14. There are three variants, each having a few more features than the others. Pinnacle Studio Ultimate Collection is the top of V14 line. The only drawback is that some of the bonus content, such as the SoundSoap program, are no longer included and earlier versions will not run in V14.

The good news is that the user interface has been simplified again. Pinnacle uses context-sensitive functions. In other words, double-clicking on a video clip brings up a different menu than you'd get by double-clicking on a still image. I've found the current interface to be somewhat more sensible and easier to use. There are three primary tabs: import media, edit and render output. Import gives you the choices you would expect, covering the waterfront from analog video to AVCHD. It's pretty simple to use with some good on the fly scene selection options. There are also options for directly importing from a digital camera, and interesting, a stop motion option that lets you build something resembling a flip book. Automatic scene detection is available for those who want it. Personally I find it more of a nuisance than a help.

The editing section has everything you could want in a solid low-end program. The user interface offers a storyboard or timeline or text listing formats. I am generally in the timeline view. There are scrubbers both in the movie preview window and at the bottom of the timeline, so reviewing video is an efficient procedure. Lots of keyboard shortcuts permit a speedy workflow. There are dozens of ordinary transitions and a couple of dozen other effects that will probably see little use. Plug-ins offer special features such as pan and zoom on still images, RGB color correction and so on. There is Picture-In-Picture and Chromakeying. Pinnacle provides its own custom music program called ScoreFitter, which as the name implies will generate music of a sort to fit the time of your clips. There are also some sound effects.

There are tracks for primary video, overlay video (which can also be used for dual camera shoots), titles, music, sound effects and voice overs. All in all, it's a nice, functional layout.

Pinnacle provides two competent, if not brilliant, titling programs. One creates static text which may be kerned and otherwise adjusted. It may be used to create DVD menus and the like. The other, called Motion Titler, allows more dynamic titles. Third-party titling programs run rings around it, but it is still quite usable for those who don't want exceptionally elaborate titles.

Pinnacle includes something they call "Montage Themes" which the user can customize with clips, photo and captions. They are pretty hokey, in my opinion, and not something I would use.

You can output to just about anything. DVD menu layouts are included and you can create your own. Almost all common codecs are included for video output, which is nice.

Overall, Pinnacle Studio Ultimate Collection V14 is a very nice video editing application that I would rank at the top end of the low-end programs. It has everything the average hobbyist videographer and, in a way, functions are more accessible than in Adobe Premiere Elements. But there's a caveat: buy the printed manual if it isn't included with your Pinnacle package. The manual itself is somewhat difficult to deal with, but comes in extremely handy as a ready reference when you need it. I have several low-end video editing packages and Pinnacle is the one I find myself using most often. It offers, I think, good value for the money and an unusually good user interface.

I have tried nearly all voice activation and dictation products since the mid-1990's, and I have to say this is the best one I've tried. It installs neatly and quickly with only a couple setup parameters to tweak and you're off and running.

I'm using it with Vista Ultimate x64 MCE, a USB base station wireless linked to a microphone positioned in the center of my home theater. Music and TV navigation are where it really shines. From any location in Media Center you can call up any artist or TV program/channel with one simple command!

The program is also much more stable than others I've tried. No crashes and no heavy overhead on processing power. And the customer service is excellent. I contacted them with a question and they were right back to me with the answer and some additional suggestions.

Fluenz Version F2: Spanish 1+2+3 with supplemental Audio CDs and Podcasts Review

Fluenz Version F2: Spanish 1+2+3 with supplemental Audio CDs and Podcasts
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Here are my thoughts on Fluenz after having gone through level 1 and most of level 2:

1. Leverage your English - The teaching style has been covered extensively in reviews of Fluenz Version F2: Spanish 1+2 (Win/Mac) with software DVDs, audio CDs, podcasts, and Navigator. Learn Spanish with the latest upgrade., so I won't go into it too much. I will just point out that an important part of adult learning is making connections to existing knowledge. This is why learning subsequent languages is easier than learning your first foreign language - you have more vocabulary and structures to refer back to.As far as I know, Fluenz is the only program that actively leverages your knowledge of English for learning Spanish, and it makes retaining the information so much easier.

2. Human Touch - Sonia gives encouraging comments, explains difficult concepts clearly, and even cracks a joke here and there. This human touch makes a huge difference as far as staying motivated goes.

3. Useful Language - Nothing is more frustrating than hitting a lesson in a traditional program that goes over useless information ('the door is red', 'the car is not yellow' , etc).No amount of brownie points can motivate you to move forward in such a situation.I am nearly done with level 2, and so far I haven't found a single lesson that I didn't feel was useful.Every single sentence and every structure is something I can go out and apply immediately. For me, this is the greatest motivation to continue learning.

4. Cost - You get what you pay for.Period.Sure there are plenty of cheap and free methods out there, but the learning model isn't nearly as effective, and the most common outcome with these programs is to get frustrated and give up.Think of it like this:the cost per credit hour at a US university ranges from roughly 100 to 500 dollars. One semester of a language class is 3 or 4 credits. It will probably take you two or three semesters to learn what you will get out of Fluenz 1+2+3, and you won't get the control and personalization you get with Fluenz. The cost of Fluenz is a small price to pay for communication.

5. Previously Mentioned Flaws - All of the errors mentioned in reviews of Spanish 1+2 (before Nov 09) have been addressed as far as I can see (please correct me if I'm wrong) in the new F2 release.Typo's have been fixed and the interface has been optimized so that it runs smoothly.Kudos to the desing team at Fluenz - somehow they managed to incorporate the most requested features into the new version without making the program any more cluttered or less intuitive.

6. Suggestion - My only suggestion would be to have a dedicated vocabulary building module.Fluenz has done a masterful job maximizing the level of fluency you achieve while minimizing the amount of vocabulary you have to memorize (I believe there are roughly 300 words per level). This is great - this is how I think it should be in the beginning. However, if you really want to be fluent, you will eventually have to suck it up and learn the vocabulary.Fluenz, I hope you can find a way to make vocabulary building as engaging as you have made the rest of language learning and perhaps create a separate program for this.In the mean time, there are vast resources for vocabulary building already available either for free or at a very low cost.

The Most Comprehensive Program to Learn Spanish

Spanish 1+2+3
This comprehensive program will guide you through Spanish in 90 sessions that take up to two and a half hours each to complete. Each session is led from beginning to end by a tutor who guides learners step-by-step with explanations, strategies, tactics, and tips to help English speakers reach a level of conversational Spanish in the least amount of time.
The Fluenz Difference
Designed by recent graduates of Harvard, Brown and Cornell, along with veterans in language learning and high technology, Fluenz addresses the critical issues for adults and teens to reach fluency: 1) clear explanations in plain English, 2) the motivation only a great teacher can provide, and 3) hundreds of hours of focused practice specifically tailored to help English speakers master Spanish.

No Substitute for a Great Tutor
Fluenz offers a great teacher to challenge and inspire you. Instead of matching pictures with Spanish words over and over again, fluency can be reached more quickly by having someone actually explain to you in English how the language works. That's why every Fluenz session is built around a tutor who leads you through the learning process.
Adults Should Be Taught Like Adults
Linguistic research shows that adults learn languages differently than children. Adults really benefit from having clear explanations of how the language works. Instead of focusing on childlike phrases such as "red apple, green apple," Fluenz has you ordering food, giving directions to a taxi driver, making hotel reservations, and handling a wide range of other real-world situations right from the start.
Custom-Made For English Speakers
Cookie-cutter approaches based on matching pictures and words follow the same script from language to language. But using the same script to teach both Spanish and Swahili doesn't make sense. Each language is unique, and each one presents its own unique challenges to an English speaker. For example, it is impossible to understand the difference between the critical Spanish verbs "ser" and "estar" without an explanation in English. Fluenz makes a difference because a real tutor guides you along a path specifically designed for you to learn Spanish.
Three Steps Towards Fluency
With Spanish 1+2+3, you'll start out by building a strong foundation in how the language works from pronunciation to grammatical structures. Right away, you'll learn how to form useful questions and statements ("The check, please"), and from there you'll begin to construct more complex sentences in a variety of situations, using the past, present and future tenses. The third level of the program takes your Spanish to a whole new level, enhancing the complexity and subtlety of your speech with in-depth work on reflexive verbs, verb complements, conjugations, functional expressions, and extensive vocabulary that greatly expands the range of conversations you can engage in with Spanish speakers. You'll be introduced to more nuanced tenses, like the present progressive and conditional, that give your Spanish more flexibility and fluidity, and with this you'll move beyond canned phrases to being able to participate in natural, unrehearsed conversation.
How It Works
Fluenz Spanish is organized around one-one on tutoring sessions that each take up to two and a half hours to complete.
How Fluenz Begins
The Fluenz tutor begins each session with a brief introduction. This provides an understanding of how the new material will take you a step closer to fluency, while immersing you in the cultural context and the experiences of everyday Spanish.
Introducing useful, everyday language
This is followed by a realistic conversation between native speakers that uses all the words and structures to be learned in the session. These conversations place you in the most common, everyday situations right from the very beginning.
Immersive one-on-one tutorial
Immediately after the conversation, the tutor presents a full tutorial explaining in detail and in English how every single new word and structure works. Beyond in-depth explanations, these tutorials offer strategies, tactics and personal experiences that give you valuable insights.
Workout to fluency
After each tutorial, the program turns to over a dozen different types of increasingly challenging workouts that cover reading, writing, speaking, and listening. These workouts reinforce and expand your communication at the same time.
Coaching you forward
At the end of the session, the Fluenz tutor returns to offer a conclusion, along with the kind of inspiration only a human teacher can provide.
The Path to Fluency 1+2+3

1. Build a Strong Foundation
Fluenz Spanish begins by teaching how to form questions and statements that are useful on day one, and that share the same word order in English and Spanish (i.e. "The check, please," "I want this dish"). The Fluenz team felt this was more relevant than phrases such as "The horse is jumping," found in other programs. For example, after only the first four sessions of level one, learners are already able to have effective conversations in a restaurant.

2. Describe Location and Directions
The program then shifts to describing and asking about location. In this way users can learn the basics of how crucial verbs work while advancing their vocabulary related to transportation and travel. Instead of memorizing words and pictures, Fluenz users actually get to understand how questions and phrases such as "Where is the hotel?" and "I'm going to the museum" both work and are used in everyday life.
3. Gain Confidence With Your Verbs
Verbs are the action words of language. In Spanish, verb forms change depending on whom they refer to, resulting in an infamous number of conjugations. Because passive memorization won't do, Fluenz thoroughly covers Spanish verbs by emphasizing the most useful ones, explaining in English how they work, and providing plenty of practice to make sure you can use them when you really need to.
4. Employ Spanish Possessives
Another great structure that can easily be understood by English speakers is the formation of Spanish possessives ("The hotel's restaurant," "The museum's entrance"). Using possessives is a simple way to add precision and sophistication to your Spanish.
5. Valuable Descriptive Terms
Because language without description lacks life and color, Fluenz puts great emphasis on how to add this important dimension to your interactions. Plus, when traveling through a country, nothing is going to be more helpful than "bigger," "smaller," "less expensive," and those other adjectives that both make sense to English speakers and are easily used in forming sentences.
6. Building Blocks of Sophisticated Communication
Since the key to fluency in Spanish is being able to use all of the most common parts of speech, Fluenz covers a wide range of central grammar issues. From pronouns and prepositions to word order and commands, you'll be able to correctly form complex sentences and express yourself with solid, confident Spanish.
7. Understand Directions and Transportation
Giving and receiving directions is both a way to continue building the essential tools of Spanish communication and a way to develop the skills anyone traveling will always need. Fluenz creates a path that gives English speakers complete control over the critical vocabulary and structures for asking questions, indicating directions, negotiating transportation, and explaining locations.

8. Easily Handle Numbers and Time
After thorough workouts enabling learners to talk about location with ease, Fluenz makes sure you master numbers and, therefore, time. From counting up to 999,999 to telling the time, Fluenz users gain control over a wide range of time-specific communication. Once time and location are joined, it becomes possible to form complex questions and statements in a variety of situations, such as planning trips or making appointments.
9. Confident Shopping and Negotiation
Throughout the program, your ability to interact in shopping situations is steadily improved. Fluenz works on the critical verb "to want" in the very beginning, and soon enough you learn how to ask about prices, make comparisons between different items, and express exactly what you're looking for. By the end of the program, you'll be able to handle shopping, price negotiations, and purchasing situations with ease.
10. Conquer Irregular and Reflexive Verbs
Spanish verbs often present the greatest challenge to English speakers, but with clear explanations and focused practice, you'll not only be able to understand the most common verbs but also use them effectively yourself. The conjugation of irregular verbs in the past, present and future tenses takes your Spanish to a new level of sophistication. At the same time, reflexive verbs, which don't exist in English, can add a whole repertoire of action to your speech.
11. Make Plans with Conditions and Possibilities
Fluenz gives you the tools to make detailed plans, whether a lunch date with a friend, a business meeting, or travel abroad, using the nuanced tenses and adverbs that allow you to express condition and possibility. The program focuses on the uses of "I would like" and "I might" to form expressions of possibility. The incorporation of conditional sentences using "if," as well as the introduction of new vocabulary pertaining to a variety of activities, will give your Spanish the precision and flexibility needed to handle almost any arrangement.
12. Discuss Family and Describe People
As your Spanish becomes more complex and flexible, conversations will move from basic needs and wants to sharing personal stories and background. Beyond telling stories, however, the vocabulary used to describe family can translate into a multiplicity of scenarios and give you the capacity to describe people whether looking for someone in a restaurant or talking about your favorite movie star.
13. Express Opinions and Preferences
From dining situations to making plans with friends, being able to express your opinions and preferences is a key component to everyday language. The program introduces the verbs "to believe/think," "to prefer," "to wish," and the expression "it's true that..." will empower you in shopping situations ("I prefer the blue one"), making plans ("I think we should go tomorrow if it isn't raining"), and discussing an endless number of topics from politics to sports ("I wish I could play tennis, but I think I'm a good soccer player").
14. Spanish for the Workplace
Fluenz is currently being used by public health professionals, executives at Fortune 500 companies, priests of Spanish-speaking parishes, senior personnel at the UN, firefighters, social workers, lawyers, and law enforcement officers. Fluenz Spanish is also used by elite units of the US Navy in Virginia. Whether your work engages in the Spanish-speaking communities of the US or takes you on business to Latin America or Spain, Fluenz equips you with the tools to handle scheduling, negotiation and formal conversations, while providing you with the strongest possible foundation in the language from which to expand your vocabulary to suite your field of expertise. Most importantly, you'll be learning how to engage in conversations from day one, which means you can start using your Spanish in the workplace right away.
15. Speak Naturally Wherever You Go
Spanish is a beautiful, vibrant language. Once you've established a foundation in how the language works, it is time to add more life to your Spanish by expanding not only your vocabulary, but also your comfort with a variety of familiar expressions and sentence structures. As the program progresses, you'll discover the conjunctions, interjections and adverbs that make your Spanish flow naturally.Spanish 1+2+3 is not just about "getting by" in a language; it is about giving you the tools to hold conversations with multiple verb tenses, the relevant vocabulary and the confidence to engage what you know in a real-life setting.
Ideal for Communicating Wherever People Speak Spanish
Fluenz Spanish 1+2+3 provides a comprehensive understanding in the fundamentals of the Spanish language and develops, step-by-step, the vocabulary, flexible sentence structures and verb forms to engage in unrehearsed conversations wherever you find yourself speaking Spanish. Fluenz has been successfully used for work, travel and in local communities.

Great Audio CDs and Exclusive Podcasts

Audio CDs: Spanish for Your Car or iPod
Moving beyond typically dry and hollow language learning tapes, the Fluenz team engaged two professionals who could communicate the richness and emotion of Spanish. Fluenz Spanish 1+2+3 comes with three audio CDs that feature the voices of Hollywood actor Edgar Ramirez, HBO Latin America star Ivan Loscher, and Fluenz tutor Sonia Gil.
Fluenz Podcasts: Download to Learn on the Go
Continuing a tradition at the Fluenz Lab, Fluenz Spanish offers exclusive podcasts made by the same team that created the interactive program. These downloadable podcasts supplement the training work offered by the audio CDs, while providing a more informal, relaxed window into the world of Spanish and the actual learning of the language.
The Fluenz Navigator: Your Essential Phrase Book
Fluenz Spanish also comes with the Fluenz Navigator, a useful quick-reference guide for travelers with all the most critical words and phrases for getting by abroad.

I bought this title a couple of days ago. I gave it four out of five stars because the enrollment was a bit frustrating. The setup was as easy as pie. The enrollment took about 15 minutes, not the five they said. I had to read three stories about iinventors. Hey, it was worth the hassles. The second day that i used it, it went extremely well. It recognized 99% of what i was saying. The technology is great. When you say something, it processes first. It is a bit behind you though. You may be sayingsomething 2 or three sentences ahead of what it is typing. I recommend this product to anybody. You are getting a great buy for the price! Look, I'm typing with it right now! Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 Standard - A309a-K07-10.0 Review

Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 Standard - A309a-K07-10.0
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this software for my 3rd grade dyslexic daughter from [...]. She loves it! I am tempted to get another one for me for work as well. We definitely speak faster that typing at 100 words a minute.

I first used this software about 9 years ago when I was teaching special education at the high school level. It has greatly improved since then. There are not nearly as many mistakes and the training process (teaching the computer to understand the way you speak/your accent) is simpler. It took about a half hour for her to train and she picked up on the phrases right away! She really enjoys writing emails to family now and controlling websites and Windows programs with her voice. She will start using it at school next week.

I'm so glad that she has a way to get her thoughts on screen/paper. She is creative, but was getting so frustrated with spelling that she began to shy away from writing. I believe will make a huge difference in her education.

If you are purchasing this for someone who is blind or dyslexic, you might need to whisper in his/her ear what the type says on the screen during training. Also, talking naturally in phrases or sentences before pausing works better than waiting for the word to come up before saying the next word. It uses the context to help figure out which words to use. For example, it will wait to hear the rest of a sentence when you start off with the word "There"/"Their"/"They're". If you want to have it include automatic punctuation (commas, periods, question marks, exclamation points) you can set it that way. I chose to turn it off so that my daughter has to tell it the punctuation to improve her writing skills.

I am really impressed with the advances this software has made over the years. There are also versions that work with phones/bluetooth and other devices, I believe. Enjoy!

TomTom Navigator 5 Software with Maps of North America for compatible PDAs with Bluetooth Review

TomTom Navigator 5 Software with Maps of North America for compatible PDAs with Bluetooth
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Buy this instead of their bundle with their bluetooth GPS. Vuy the Holux GPSlim instead, it's the same receiver but in a more convenient package which doesn't need to be powered on every time and has a replaceable battery and external antenna connection.

This review is based on six months of daily use and a couple of 3500 mile trips through western USA and Canada.

I use a Dell Axim X51v, so performance is not an issue, even on thousand mile routes the initial route calculation only takes a few seconds.

Installation. The installation was simple and trouble free. I had heard that getting the product might be an issue but as soon as I connected my PDA to the internet and entered the key I got authorized. I guess the individual state maps are on the rest of the CDs, I only needed the installation and the first two map CDs. For myself I'd rather this had been on a DVD. By comparison iGuidance Europe, which is on a DVD, took two trips to the Internet to search for help and quite a bit of messing with the Bluetooth connection before it could see the receiver.

Connecting. If the application is started whilst Bluetooth is disabled on the PDA it simply enables it and connects. Other than waiting a few seconds there has never been an issue with the Bluetooth initerface. If you need to pair it the code is 0000. If you need to use a different GPS then tap the screen, hit "change preferences" then three right arrows and then "show GPS status". Hit the "Configure", use the arrows to select the right hardware and hit Select. Easy. In iGuidance I had to add the receiver as an 'outgoing' serial connection and then tell it which com port had been assigned.

The 3D and normal map displays are both useful, however the zoom controls only last a few seconds and then the map returns to showing only a small section of road ahead. The zoom seems to be controlled partially by proximity to your next turn and partly by local road details, so in urban areas you get about a quarter of a mile. Perhaps they did this for safety, but in that case they shouldn't have provided the controls. In cities this is ok but when you are driving around rural areas it doesn't let you see the area around you, so you can't see if your route is sensible. I have taken to using the browse map view and then moving it as I drive in rural areas. I should be able to zoom the display until it shows a level of detail that is useful to me and it should stay there.

The text at the bottom of the screen can show the next turn, speed, distance to go, current time, time to go and eta. The choices are configurable, but nothing like the twenty or thirty that Garmin allowed you to choose from six years ago. The text is very small, I have good eyes and I really have to look hard to see the figures. If I'm 400 miles from my next turn I need to know that a lot more than I need to know I'm going to be turning left when I get there. For this sort of price it should be possible to have more control of the information displayed. iGuidance shows even less information and gives you less control. But this is another case where Garmin had a better solution six years ago.

Touching the lower right corner brings up the overview of the route, this should have pan/zoom controls and be in the day/night color scheme. For a trip of several hundred miles it's hardly possile to make out the route on the full VGA display of the X51v.

The options for finding a destination are easy to use, the ones I have needed were address, city center, POI and point on map. The routing is also non-volatile, so you can stop for the night and resume in the morning. One strange thing is that the previous destinations are stored per map, so if you route to a city on the major roads map and then switch to a more detailed map the destination isn't on the list of recent destinations. The unit exhibits a common problem to north american products, you can't route between countries, you can't ask for a route from Calgary Alberta to Salt Lake City Utah because there isn't a map that has both cities. If you want to route from Bute Montana to Idaho Falls Idaho you have to use the major roads map because the states are on different major maps, west and plains. Worth bearing in mind if you live on a border.

Trip time predictions are very poor. For a trip from Alameda CA to Port Angeles WA the initial prediction was around 18 hours, which means they are using an average speed of around 50mph. That may be reasonable for I880 on a Monday at 9am but it's 50% out for I5 in northern california. The actual duration was about 14 hours including stops for food and fuel and a visit to Hertz in Portland, OR. On smaller roads the errors are much larger. For the Nephi UT to Tonopah, NV the predicted time was over eight hours and the actual trip time was just over four. On major rural roads in Canada with a 60mph limit the trip times appear to be based on a 30mph average.

Routing is fast and the suggested route is certainly in the right direction, but there are issues related to poor choices of road speeds. The software works out the time taken for various routes based on the average speeds for those road classes, but the low freway and major road settings lead it to choose apparently shorter routes through urban areas, this means that it avoids fast roads like US101. In Calgary it routed my south for miles on city streets when I was only half a mile from Deerfoot Trail which is a 65mph road with no stop lights and ultimately becomes I15 at the border. There are also minor weirdnesses, on my daily commute I take I880 south from Oakland CA to San Jose CA, at I238 it directs me to take the off ramp, then then on ramp back to I880. Strangely, if you start from a different place it is able to route you straight down I880 without detouring to the off ramp. Mostly the routes aren't bad though, but Garmin did it better five years ago.

Rerouting: If you ask for an alternate route it seeks an alternate for all of the route. So if you are going from Oakland, CA to Seattle, WA and get stuck in traffic trying to get to the freeway and ask for another route it will not only change the entrance onto the freeway, it will also reroute the rest of the trip, so instead of a long day on I5 you may find yourself on a three day drive up the coast. The simple solution is to divert until you are past the problem and then to resubmit the original destination.

There are some major mapping errors, much of the time in Canada and Montana the mapped road position was tens or even hundreds of yards from the actual position. This causes the software to either show you driving through open fields near the road, or down the wrong side of a freeway, or even down the frontage road hundreds of yards away on the far side of the freeway in Banff national park. This causes some strange voice directions too, like "turn around when possible" when you are driving down I15 at 70mph and have been going the right way for hours and have to keep going straight ahead for hours. Most city streets in the US are spot on though. But the maps do seem to be 2-4 years out of date.

POI problems. The POI list is very lacking. Maybe half to two thirds of gas stations are missing. But worse is the method of selecting POIs. You can look up stores by name, but in the case of the major chains you can get quite a few hits. In places like the San Francisco Bay Area there's a world of difference between somewhere 11 miles down I880 and ten miles across the bay, the first is a 22 mile round trip and the second could be 70. All you get is a list of stores with distances, no address, no direction. So you can't tell which 15 mile distant place they are in. If you select the wrong one and thereby discover that you need to drive thirty miles and cross a toll bridge to get there then there's no back button, you have to go through the whole POI selection process again. This is a method that is not yet ready for the real world. It took me a good ten minutes to discover that the POI list didn't know about the particular version of the store that I thought it should know, I guess I didn't really need it, but then I'm not always in my own back yard. Garmin gives the address and direction of POIs before you commit to one.

In Death Valley the POI list was positively dangerous. My rented SUV was down to about 100 miles range and Tomtom was telling me to go back through Death Valley to get gas. In the event there was a gas station about 20 miles ahead of me. I passed three more gas stations before I got to Las Vegas, and even there it only listed a few stations. Fortunately they are well signposted.

The map accuracy and POI list needs a lot of work.

Only the main map display follows the day/night color scheme, the route map and browsable maps remain in their standard eye wateringly bright colors. A brightness control would be more useful than night colors, but to get to that you have to go to the PDA settings, not something I feel like doing whilst driving.

At the end of November '05 Tomtom released Navigator version 5.21 for Windows Mobile 5. The behavior of the system has certainly changed. The most noticeable thing is that it now strongly prefers the shortest route for in city 'fastest' routes. Unfortunately that means that it will now route me on surface streets rather than the adjacent interstate. For example Alameda to Emeryville can be achieved almost exclusively at 60mph+ on I880, I980, I580 and I80 and yet the new version chooses the surface streets at 25mph with lights every block. I suppose it can't be expected to know that the route it chooses goes through West Oakland which has more murders than most European countries.

I have contacted Tomtom customer support about the...Read more›

Propellerhead Reason 4.0 Recording Software Review

Propellerhead Reason 4.0 Recording Software

Reason Version 4.0 - Mac - Review 9-15-2008

In order to give a meaningful review of Reason 4.0 and the major improvements in this latest version of Propellerheads' music creation software package, I first need to state exactly what Reason is, and what it is not.

The most descriptive definition of Reason is that it is basically a "virtual rack mount studio", complete with a built in sequencer, faithfully simulated in a single software package.

For those who are familiar with rack mount studio units, Reason incorporates most (if not all) common hardware rack mount units you would find in a typical recording studio. This includes mixer boards, effects processors (such as reverb, distortion, chorus and flanger units, etc.), two very robust digital samplers which can use samples and wave files as instrumental components, a drum sequencer, a drum sequence sampler/playback tool, and several analog synthesizer units as well - and much, much more. Each of these devices can be "cable patched" into one another within Reason in almost any conceivable combination, and all of the units look and act like their hardware counterparts would in an actual recording studio.

Also, you can "create" as many of these virtual hardware components as you need and the only limitation you have on how many you can effectively use is limited only by your computer's processor speed, RAM, and the sound card hardware in your computer.Since Reason 4.0 uses software to simulate the functions of these virtual hardware units, having a high-end soundcard is NOT necessary to get the most out of the Reason package.Any decent PC or Mac sound card or chip is capable of getting near perfect sound quality out of this package - even the basic sound hardware found in a standard off the shelf Mac laptop such as the MacBook Pro will do just fine.

As a digital music creation platform, Reason has been very good for years, with one noticeable feature missing:The ability to record "live" instruments, such as guitars or vocals.

While this lack of live recording ability has always made Reason a questionably "complete" DAW(Digital Audio Workstation) software package, what it lacks in recording capability it more than makes up for by what it does best:Be a one-man-band/studio in a single box.For those who are already using another software package such as CakeWalk Sonar Studio for live recording, Reason does have the ability to be "rewired" into other packages that support rewiring, such as Sonar. As an add-on component to other DAW software packages, Reason adds a some huge capabilities to other programs and can more than stand on it's own for creation of any conceivable type of electronic music from hip hop to classical to jazz and far beyond.

If you are looking to do a lot of live instrument recording, you might want to look at another software package, but if you are doing something "instrumental", say composing a music piece for a television commercial, look no further.Reason has you covered - in a very big way.

This basic description of Reason as a "one stop recording studio" was accurate for version 2.5.While Reason Version 2.5 was very robust, there were several features that were noticeably missing:

- The ability to easily combine samplers or synths into "layered" instruments (more than one type of sound being controlled by a single sequencer track)
- A coherent and robust piano roll / track view with typical visual components (e.g. as found in other DAW packages such as Sonar)
- A mastering suite of tools for controlling final mix down of tracks into a final polished and well engineered song
- The ability to change tempo within a music project by measure
- A very robust and complex synthesizer capable of producing a huge range of different sounds

Starting with the last drawback first, Reason 2.5 and 3.0 contained 2 main synths:The Subtractor Analog synth and the Malstrom Graintable synth.Reason 4 also still contains these two instruments. While these two synths were plenty capable of producing a host of "vintage" style synths sounds, they lacked the kind of customization that can be found in other high-end digital music packages such as Apple's Logic audio software, making music such as "trance" or "techno-electronica" style music incredibly difficult, if not impossible, to do in Reason. This has now changed in a radical way for the better.More on that in a minute...

Reason 3.0 was a huge step in the right direction for Reason users. There were two major advances in Reason 3.0:

- The addition of a FULL suite of recording and mastering tools including a parametric EQ unit and a compressor unit, (among others). The mastering suite units were a huge leap forward for Reason because they allowed composers to control exactly how a finished song should sound - and even how individual instruments within the song should sound - and these units also greatly reduced the occurrences of audio-clipping which can ruin a digital recording. As with all other Reason "hardware units" the user has the ability to create and use as many mastering units as needed for any given project, limited only by processor speed and the amount of RAM in the user's computer.

- The addition of a new rack unit called the "Combinator".The Combinator was another giant improvement on the Reason package because it allowed users to "group" any other kinds of Reason units into 1 "package" or "group" and then assign the entire group to a single sequencer track. This meant that a user could now throw a mixer, some effects units, and several instruments into 1 package and treat the entire package as a single instrument from within the sequencer.Obviously, this stretched Reason's sound producing capabilities much further and allowed the user to create multi-layered polyphonic instruments with ease.

Reason 3.0 was a great leap forward, for sure, but there were still the problems of having a somewhat limited synthesizer capability (there were still only the 2 synth units, and Reason was still fairly limited in that respect), you still couldn't change tempos mid song (you were pretty much stuck with one time signature per song) and the sequencer still had several problems that made it difficult, frustrating and often time consuming when working within the sequencer itself. With respect to the sequencer issues, there were several other problems, but rather than go into all the details of what was still wrong with Reason 3.0, let's just get to the new version of Reason: Reason Version 4.0 and go over how any and ALL drawbacks of Reason 3.0 are now completely eliminated in Reason version 4.

Reason 4.0 is probably the first version of Reason that has finally eliminated any and all potential weaknesses with this software package, and Reason 4.0 is truly a devastating creative tool for musicians looking for full-featured music creation, recording and engineering package for less than a thousand bucks. This is especially true if you are looking to do any kind of techno, trance, or industrial music as the new "Thor" polyphonic synthesizer utterly SLAYS anything previous versions of Reason had in terms of synthesis of sound or synchronized sequences of sound.

Probably the biggest instrumental leap forward for Reason 4.0 is the addition of the "Thor" Polyphonic Analog Synthesizer as a new instrument found only in Reason version 4.0.The Thor synth is an amazing piece of "virtual hardware" that allows the user to create literally thousands (if not millions) of possible combinations of sound generators, oscillators, filters, envelope controls, and even automated or hardware controlled sound parameters, which can handle almost any aspect of sound generation. While Reason 4.0 ships with a fairly decent amount of Thor "instruments presets" pre-created, these prefabricated presets really only scratch the surface of what Thor is truly capable of.

When the sequencing hardware found within Thor is combined with various parameters of the Thor sound generators and controllers, Thor completely blows away any kind of synth found in previous versions of Reason, and now the Reason software package has the capability of producing the deep and complex types of sounds and sequence loops that are often only found in hardware synths costing nearly two thousand dollars or more. The sequencing generator in Thor can be used to create delays, arpeggios, small instrumental sub-sequences and all other manner of complex sound effects found in a lot of high-end keyboard synths, and this places Reason 4.0's synth sound generation and control squarely in Apple's "Logic" audio software territory as well as now putting Reason 4.0 on the same turf as higher end Korg and Roland keyboard workstations.By using Thor in combination with Reason's Combinator and the already built-in digital samplers, the sky is no longer the limit for sound creation in Reason. The Thor Polyphonic Synth is a HUGE addition to Reason version 4.0 and alone is well worth the price of admission by itself, but Reason version 4.0 doesn't stop there.

The second, and another very significant upgrade to Reason version 4.0 is that all of the previous drawbacks of the Reason 2.5/3.0 sequencer have been completely eliminated in version 4.0.

Like previous versions of Reason, you can color-code your track labels with a right click on the track header. You can now toggle between track view and sequence piano roll view with a single mouse click; each of the tracks can now be viewed with the sequence elements (such as note placement in the piano roll now visible in track view as well) as well as effects controllers and note properties fully visible with a mouse click or two...Read more›

I recently purchased this new ViaVoice advanced 9 edition. My first ViaVoice was the personal 8 edition which was a very good voice recognition software for the money.I upgraded to this version to see what better applications it has to offer.I have been pleasantly surprised with this new version.I am able to talk directly into instant messengers such as yahoo, msn, aol and also able to talk directly into fields such as the one I am filling out right now.You talk, it types. It really does work and if you like to send instant messages or spend more time doing other things than typing, then get this software. You will enjoy it.
Also the installation process was very easy. For those of you that already have a ViaVoice software and want to upgrade, the software does all the work, you don't have to re-teach your voice model because it upgrades it automatically with the new software.

This mic is sold as not needing a preamp.I found this to be mis-leading.Trying to record on a PC sound card using only the 9v battery and the mic input was hopeless unless you want to record something very, very loud.I ended up getting a Behringer tube preamp and now I can record using the line input with high sensivity.

Other than that it works fine for my application: voice-overs.

Fiction Fixers: Adventures in Wonderland Standard Edition Review

Fiction Fixers: Adventures in Wonderland Standard Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, realise that 'Standard Edition' means what it says. The description of the game implies that this is the bonus edition with the Hansel & Gretel game, but Amazon's title is correct.

There are definitely some flaws to 'Alice', but overall, it's a good start should it become a series. The voices and story scenes are a big plus - they put some effort into this. The game is primarily HOG, with inventory items collected for later use.For the most part, it's easy enough to figure out what needs to be done next - the map is extremely helpful as an indicator of places with 'unsolved mysteries' awaiting the appropriate item.Should you get really stuck, there is an in-game strategy guide, similar to walkthroughs provided by gaming sites.

A few things could be improved - the HOG scenes need sharper graphics, and some objects just are not as well-drawn as they should be.It's rather odd that a game that is otherwise quite lovely fails at this point, though at least the objects are appropriate to the book. The mini-games are pretty generic - I'm not a huge fan of the 'casse-tete' type of logic games, nor do I like anything requiring coordination and skill - if I wanted an arcade game, I'd buy an arcade game.I did enjoy the lobster-bounce, though I can't think what that had to do with the story - for the most part, the mini-games do integrate well into the story. Most importantly, they can be skipped (otherwise, I'd still be stuck on the 'golf' game).

The game could be longer - I think it took me about three hours. It's not a bad deal for the current price ($6.99), especially since it really is a lot of fun, but with a whole book to work with, the story could have been expanded with more things to find and do.

ViaVoice Millennium Ed./Mac Review

ViaVoice Millennium Ed./Mac
Average Reviews:

While Apple has offered ambitious attempts of its own at system-level speech recognition on the Macintosh for several years and even at present, it has been wise to promote IBM's entry into the Mac space. IBM hasrenowned chops in the voice rec department and proves it admirably withViaVoice for Mac 1.0.
Initial training of the application requires acertain amount of diligence but is eventually rewarded by a remarkableaccuracy and flexibility in the transcription process. It will require somepatience and a conscientious effort by the user to accommodate the verycomplex nature of computer-based voice recognition. We may be but a yearfrom 2001, but ViaVoice will not turn your computer into 'HAL' by anyestimation. A combination of careful speech and fingers close to thekeyboard may prove to be the most practical strategy when using thisproduct.
It should also be noted that--as is ever the case withCPU-intensive applications such as ViaVoice--current-generation,high-performance hardware is recommended if not realistically required foroptimal results.
No doubt ViaVoice will be improved in future versions, but this initial effort is already a marvel of software engineering. Andit's a true 'Mac-savvy' product. I commend IBM for some fine work.

I purchased, used and will return Rosetta Stone. And I've purchased, I'm using, and still haven't returned Fluenz. Although my father is German and I've been around that language all my life, I decided to learn French. When doing the initial research on available options I concluded that RS and Fluenz seemed to be the only choices for any kind of comprehensive self-teaching package. Although pricey, they were far cheaper than a French private tutor in my area, and probably cheaper than classes when factoring in all the material included.

Rosetta Stone presents an immersion type learning system in which one is supposed to learn as if one were a child. The theory behind this is that children learn languages fast, particularly their own, and going back to this stage would be productive for adults. After some reading I believe this theory was invented by Maximilian Berlitz 130 years ago, or in about 1888.My first few hours with the program proved rewarding in the sense that I learned a great deal of vocabulary, even if a lot of it was infantile. This session gave me momentum to continue, as well as the expectation that I would be presented with some sort of sequence allowing me to tie all the vocabulary together in a productive manner. In reality, the program generated more complex phrases, instead of single words or simple phrases, but without enough logic for me to understand the underlying grammar. I understood little yet the complexity of the sentences being generated kept growing. As advertised, there were no explanations of any kind, but the troublesome part is that the material was never presented for learners with a sense of clarity. Even the so called Milestone, which offered a more dynamic situation, was not designed to offer the right grammar clues needed to able to see the whole instead of many parts. I never tried again after my second attempt, having given up on the idea that arbitrary words and phrases would contribute to my progress through the language.

Fluenz had an opposite effect on me. They proposed to explain everything in detail so that I would understand what I was learning. They further suggested that seeing French from the point of view of the English grammar would make the process a logical one. After not much reading this view seemed to come from modern Linguists followers of Chomsky, as well as those versed in Cognitive Science. I was therefore expecting a great deal of fireworks. Yet, things went off to a slow start.

At first I thought that it was too simple, progressing too slowly. I jumped through the first three lessons. When I reached the fourth lesson of Fluenz it became clear the program was nothing if not meticulous in its presentation of the material. Even more surprising, the tutor was not simply talking, but going through a careful plan. The words presented in the initial conversation were exactly the words explained by the tutor, and exactly the words in the exercises. These workouts, to use their gym parlance, were actually quite effective; and sufficiently directed to allow me to retain and be able to use all the language being taught. There is little time wasted as every word matters, and every structure can be linked to everything else being learned. Again, the pace is very deliberate for an average learner, but it is quite clear that every new step comes after the prior one has been rigorously reviewed.

I'm well into Level 2 and the standard continues to hold. Overall the media production is well done, and the program not at all difficult to run. I'm currently looking forward to finishing the program and putting all the work to the test in Quebec. My expectation is that everything will work out.
