My Memories Suite 2.0 Digital Scrapbooking Software Review

My Memories Suite 2.0 Digital Scrapbooking Software
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a super program for quickly creating scrapbooks. I've used online services like Shutterfly, which I initially loved, but which quickly got stale as I began to resent the limited choice of backgrounds, layouts and journaling. I've also used Photoshop for scrapbook pages but the ultimate freedom in creating what you want leads to far too much time spent doing it plus every page starts from scratch and has to be created from the ground up.My Memories Suite is the perfect balance. It comes with a large selection of prearranged photo layouts and you also have the option of creating your own. It comes with a large selection of backgrounds and embellishments but you can also import your own from any source - Google "digital scrapbooking freebies" and you'll come up with a ton of free ones to add in or you can buy from a large variety of designers. It is completely easy to use with all the tools just a click away in the control panel, which gives you a basic set of tools.

I have to say, I was on the fence for such a long time deciding whether to abandon traditional scrapbooking in favor of digital and I'm so glad I did.I made the decision last August and in two months, used this software to finish entire albums for 2006, 2007 and 2008.Earlier this year, I received my 2009 album.I've never been so caught up and my family loves it.They actually get to see current pictures and my albums sit right on my coffee table for everyone to enjoy.

There were a ton of great improvements to Version 2 including the Resource Gallery which lets you really easily browse layouts, backgrounds, embellishments, etc. A huge new feature is WordArt for creating titles with all sorts of effects, including filling individual letters or whole words with your own photos. In the Text Box area, they've added the ability to wrap your text around circles or squares.

My Memories Suite can print your albums for you at a very competitive price or if you have a printing service you like, just export as high quality JPEGS and print individual pages, whole books or create photo gifts wherever you like.I love that I own and maintain possession of all my pages and unlike services like Shutterfly where I can only share entire albums once they are complete, with this software, I share my completed pages as I finish them.My family loves to see my pages show up on Facebook and Blogger.

The multimedia options for adding music and saving my book as a video are also a nice bonus. Some reviewers in the past have blasted the digital slideshow features but you have to understand the purpose of it.If you want a software strictly for creating multimedia slideshows, this may not be your best bet - get a program dedicated to that function.Don't by scrapbooking software and then complain that it doesn't function as a video creation software. However, if you want to create a beautiful album and then have an additional way to share it with friends and family, the slideshow is a great bonus feature.

I highly recommend this software.

If you want a toy, then get this version, but if you'd like a really great tool for drawing manga, then get the EX version. The EX version may be much more expensive, but if you're a serious artist, then you might as well throw away your money if you're going to buy this version. To give you an example of how many features that this version is missing: it doesn't have vectoring, an eyedropper tool, or even a gradiation tool! Check the website's manual for a list of features it doesn't have.

Skip this version, buy the EX version.

Rosetta Stone V3: Japanese Level 1-3 Set with Audio Companion Review

Rosetta Stone V3: Japanese Level 1-3 Set with Audio Companion
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Rosetta Stone has been around for at least fourteen years, and I remember an early version in my middle school Spanish classes. I had previously studied Japanese for two semesters in high school and five courses at a four-year university (I have a Japanese minor). I never had a chance to practice my Japanese outside of class, so six years after graduation, I was looking for a way to review what I'd previously learned. Rosetta Stone Version 3 has made leaps and bounds from those early versions that were criticized for their lack of interactivity, and includes such features as voice recognition (with visual pronunciation feedback) and audio companion CDs which can be uploaded as language podcasts for easy practice during commuting, etc. The stock photographs are high-resolution and colorful, and there are native speakers modeling pronunciation (with slowed-down exaggerated pronunciation available for most screens).

Rosetta Stone works on the theory that learning a second language can be approached via the same methods we used to learn our first language as infants: visual association (beginning with color words and simple objects such as liquids and fruits), intuition (fill in the blank based on previous models), and repetition.

Not everyone learns in the same way. Certain learners are visual: they have to SEE it to learn it. Rosetta Stone excels in this area, with its bright, clear photographs. Others are auditory, having to HEAR examples. There are very clear, native-speaker modeled digital recordings here, another plus. Some learners are kinesthetic: they have to use their hands or move in order to learn; Rosetta Stone is not as successful at addressing these learners, although some activities involve matching (via clicking) and typing. Despite the emphasis on "interactivity," Rosetta Stone's method still relies on the audiolingual method, where learners largely learn language by repeating pronunciation and grammar drills. Such repetition throughout the many exercises quickly grew redundant : match the pictures. Repeat about forty times. Move on to the next unit. Match the pictures. Repeat.

First, the good: Rosetta Stone features an extremely easy-to-use interface, with lesson tracking for completed lessons (complete with dates completed). The high-quality photographs are easy to discern, and using Krashen's i+1 theory (challenge the learner above and beyond their comfort level by utilizing context, accomplished in Rosetta Stone through the visual prompts contained in photographs). The voice recognition can be finicky even when set on "normal," but generally does a good job of eliciting accurate pronunciation. Rosetta Stone is split into three levels for each language (available separately), with each level containing four units covering everyday themes such as food, health, activities, friends, and dining out. Each level contains a core unit, as well as additional speaking, reading, writing and listening practice.

The grammar presentation is lacking in explicit grammar instruction; this is a huge issue with languages that are significantly different from English, such as Japanese with its subject-object-verb word order (think Yoda-speak: Children, apples (they) eat) and particles, and counters (there are different suffixes for counting animals, people, birds, buildings, etc.), and honorific speech, for example, and you'll find yourself longing for a more traditional textbook to explain the finer points.

Also problematic are languages that use alphabets that are different from English; in the case of Japanese, there are *three* unique alphabets used: hiragana (for words of Japanese origin), katakana (for loanwords), and kanji (Chinese characters). Rosetta Stone offers four options: Romaji (presenting Japanese words in Roman script), hiragana only, kanji only, and kanji with furigana (small hiragana above Chinese characters so that you can sound out words, since each kanji symbol can have several pronunciations). There are no writing/reading exercises that address the kanji readings (onyomi and kunyomi; Chinese/Japanese pronunciations), stroke order, or kanji combinations; when you type answers, you do so using your (English) keyboard, so Rosetta Stone may not be as helpful for kanji (although a separate lesson on the hiragana alphabet is provided).

Perhaps the biggest shortcoming for me was the lack of *culture* embedded in the lessons; you're learning the language, sure, but the stock photos feature people of different ethnicities and regional costumes that often have nothing to do with the language being studied (a bearded, brightly decorated Indian man saying "Sayonara" felt out of place). Although some traditional Japanese foods such as rice and tea are mentioned, I didn't find any mention of traditional Japanese foods such as kaiseki. The same applies for traditional Japanese dress (kimono), hot springs and ryokan hotels; if you want more information, you'll have to read up elsewhere (I originally studied Japanese using the Yookoso! Invitation to Contemporary Japanese Student Edition with Online Learning Center Bind-In Card and Genki 1: An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese 1 series along with Kanji Cards, Vol. 1 (Tuttle Flash Cards) and Kanji Cards, Vol. 2 (Tuttle Flash Cards)).

Also, even though Rosetta Stone allows you to work on correcting your pronunciation, there are no real allowances for spontaneous conversation, an important step in truly becoming fluent in a language. Spontaneous conversation allows you to test out language hypotheses and to express creativity at more advanced levels; in Rosetta Stone, you're merely parroting back what the model has instructed you. In the later Milestone lessons, you're expected to recall material that was studied across the previous four units.

One last point to consider is that Rosetta Stone requires a fairly large investment of time and money. Each unit takes a minimum of several hours to complete, more if you do all the optional pronunciation exercises and if you don't skip the activities. This is not something that you can pick up a weekend before your trip to Japan, so don't expect be fluent in basic Japanese in any short amount of time. Also, the cost for the complete sets (Levels 1, 2 and 3) is close to $500; you might also consider enrolling in a language class at your community college for that price. However, if you're interested in a less-commonly-taught language such as Pashto, Irish, Indonesian or Welsh, Rosetta Stone presents a valid option. Rosetta Stone comes with the software (bundled together for all three levels), three separate Audio Companion CD sets (one for each level), and a headset with microphone. It would probably be very effective for children, since they are hardwired to pick up languages until early adolescence, but as an adult learner I found the activities to be too repetitive to hold my continued interest, and the lack of explicit grammar discussion (and the omission of Japanese culture) was also a disappointment. That's not to say that Rosetta Stone isn't effective, but it may not be the optimal language learning tool for everyone. Even so, it's one of the most impressive attempts at dynamic language learning on the market, and deserves a trial.

ATC Simulator 2 Professional Review

ATC Simulator 2 Professional

This program recreates the look/feel of an actual radar scope used by professional controllers. This is the closest thing to the real thing, unmatched by any other program hands down. If you are seeking a career in air traffic control and want to experience what it is like, this is the best and cheapest way to do that. Because this software is so accurate, it is used by a number of universities across the country. The list includes, Auburn, Indiana, Purdue, Middle Tennessee State, University of North Dakota, Ohio University and students of Embry-Riddle University. This software has also been used for research at MIT. The other review here discrediting the software because of speech recognition is completely bogus and libelous. This program is not a speech recognition program. This program SUPPORTS speech recognition capability, but that technology is created and provided by Microsoft. It is another means of input for using the program, but by no means is it the ONLY way of input. It is cool when SR works, but this is NOT what this program is about. This program is a depiction of real air traffic control equipment. This program also contains historically accurate flight plans of over 100,000 flights that were captured from the FAA flight computer system.

UPDATE23 March 2009

*SERIOUS WARNING* Rosetta Stone's customer support is awful. They will hassle you like no other software company I have ever dealt with in 16 years of computing. Should you have a system crash or two, good luck trying to reactivate. Their product activation policy (2x) is preposterous. Same machine, same IP address, same e-mail, same phone number, couldn't care less. Can you imagine if you're on the road?

For the money they charge, they should bend over backwards to work with you. I would not buy this software based on this "policy". How sad and stupid. Be very careful or you'll have a $500.00 useless Yellow Box.
*SERIOUS WARNING*

There is a lot to be said for the Rosetta Stone method of picture recognition. Also, it is set up very intuitively requiring minimum computer skills on your part to engage. I was able to get it running on both a Vista x64 desktop & a Vista x32 notebook for test purposes.

The instructions are clear and easy to follow. You have a main program disc and then the level 1, 2, 3 discs as you progress. There is nothing confusing about the process.Registration is not required. However, for activation and update of downloads I strongly suggest an Internet connection be available.Immediately upon install there were updates waiting for me.Should you not be connected, there is a toll-free phone number to call that will enable you to activate and unlock all features.

My 82 year old mother was able to negotiate and understand the program as was my 10 year old nephew.Neither one was interested at first but they admitted to having fun with it.

The quality and production values of both the software and packaging are first rate with one personal annoyance. Given the dependency on images that Rosetta Stone utilizes I would have preferred more specific Germanic cultural associations and quite frankly, less multiculturalism. The picture of a couple eating soft boiled eggs from egg cups...very German; the picture of women in robes walking across the desert with bowls on their heads...not so German. This diversity is unnecessary as far as immersion is concerned, though I assume it saves on production costs since one size seems to fit all languages, however I want to learn German, not Esperanto!

That said, this is an excellent language program, especially for the beginner. It's fun and lively. Having lived in Berlin for a year (back when there was a wall) I find the accents used by the actors to be clear and precise. And the the speech recognition very forgiving. This is a good thing because there is nothing worse than impeding progress over pronunciation.Proper pronunciation comes eventually. If you are having problems with pronunciation there are a couple of things you can do. There is a slider bar in the setup to adjust the strictness of the speech recognitionengine. Also, you can click on the items causing issues and there is a more intense pronunciation sub lesson complete with graph and syllable breakdown.

I like the visual associations because you are figuring things out for yourself and really building on what you know to learn something new. It's a subtle process...but it works...at least so far.German grammar has always driven me nuts but somehow this program has really polished my grammar.I only wish I had had this software when I was in Berlin. But then there were no PCs either!

The included USB microphone, while a bit flimsy and sans volume control, is none the less accurate, lightweight and perfectly up to the task. And since it's USB it makes connecting a whole lot easier. Great for a notebook.

This package also comes with the audio discs for when you're on the road or in your hotel room and need a jolt of subliminal/revisional learning without the computer. Plays in a CD or MP3.

I will have to save my pennies for the Spain-Euro-Spanish version because if this is any indication it will be superb as well.

Rosetta Stone V3: Chinese (Mandarin) Level 1-3 Set with Audio Companion Review

Rosetta Stone V3: Chinese Level 1-3 Set with Audio Companion
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have fond memories of using Rosetta Stone software to learn German - they have a great interface and it really enhances the fun of learning a language.Unfortunately, after carefully working through all 3 levels of their Chinese software, I sadly have come to the conclusion that it is a very poor choice for learning Mandarin Chinese. There are three, interconnected reasons for this:

First, Rosetta Stone has made no effort to adapt their software to the Chinese language - they have merely slapped Chinese audio and text onto the same course they use to teach western languages. This problem manifests both as bothersome errors and missed opportunities.I will give a few examples:

a)Instead of using Chinese names and Chinese currency, the program uses transliterations of Western names and a grabbag of difference currencies. Thus it overwhelmes the learner with the long, convoluted transliterations of Western names, leaves them unaccustomed to Chinese names, and completely unable to confront the potentially confusing Chinese currency system (with both colloquial and formal names for the different types of money).

b)Mandarin Chinese is a tonal language, with 4 tones (which determine the meaning of a sound) plus the neutral tone.A word said in the neutral tone is much softer and shorter than normal.Unfortunately, Rosetta Stone seems to have neglected to adapt their voice recognition software for this.It will often fail to register a correctly pronounced neutral tone word. The program actually is training people to pronounce the neutral tone incorrectly - too loud and too long.Further, the voice recognition system has trouble when the learner doesn't speak very slowly - a problem, since Chinese is spoken at a somewhat rapid rate. Both cause it to train bad habits into the learner.

c)The stock pictures, situations, and statements, do not at all reflect the cultural realities of Chinese language. For example, why is the learner constantly saying "xiexie" (thank you), when this is comparatively less common in China? How about teaching them to respond to complements by saying "nali nali" (where, where), a culturally appropriate response, even if strange to western ears? Why is everyone using credit cards everywhere - try relying on a credit card in China.Instead of just people buying "yao" (medicine), how about introducing the learner to the important distinction between "xiyao" (western medicine) and "zhongyao" (Chinese medicine), common terms they will confront? The program fails to give any cultural insight - and thus misses one of the most enjoyable, interesting, and useful parts of learning a language.

d)In learning Chinese, a very helpful reality is that the meaning of multisyllable words almost always has a logical relationship to the meanings of its syllables. For example, "Huo" means Fire, "Che" means Vehicle, and "huoche" literally FireVehicle, means train. This can be very helpful to the learning process - if one first learns the one syllable words, learning the combination is quick and easy.Rosetta Stone makes no effort to deviate from its stock lesson plan to take advantage of this, however. So, using our example, the learner is confronted with both "che" and "huoche" early, and isn't exposed to the meaning of "huo" until near the end of the 3rd level!

e)The "writing" exercises are absurd. You type in the pinyin (the alphabet spelling) and then are done. This is NOT writing Chinese.Writing Chinese is either drawing the character, or typing the pinyin and selecting the appropriate character from the list of characters that have this pinyin spelling, or the more complex typing methods. Most literate Chinese people are not going to be able to understand if you write them some pinyin, you need the characters. This is pure laziness on Rosetta Stone's part - they fail to incorporate what Google published free applications for!

Second, consistent with the above point, the "Roseetta Stone method" as they call it, is unsuited to learning a language as distant from English as Chinese is.The Chinese sounds represented by the consonants "sh" "s" and "x" are all going to sound alot like the English "s" to a learner, the "zh" and "j" are all going to sound like a "j", and on it goes through virtually the entire alphabet.Even if the learner eventually stumbles into being to hear the difference in normal speed speech (a big if), without some instruction he/she will never learn how to properly produce the differences. The fact is, we aren't kids anymore, and we bring the baggage of our native language with us.Ok for a Western language, perhaps, but dangerous for a far distant one like Chinese. We need to be expressly taught - "to produce the sh or zh sound, you need to have your tongue point up, while the x and j has your tongue against your lower teeth.Practice and you'll hear the difference, even if they sound somewhat alike."More subtle points also exist - Rosetta Stone is not going to stop you from pronouncing "kao" like the American way of saying the animal Cow, or that the Chinese "b", unlike the English one, is unvoiced, so you need to stop vibrating your vocal cords - that kind of refinement takes conscious effort and instruction. The same is even more true for learning the tones, and especially the "Tone Sanhi", the way they change in context, though this review is complex enough without me going into that.If you ever hope to sound better thana guy with a $10 dollar phrasebook trying to use English sounds to mangle the Chinese language, Rosetta Stone won't get you there (even if its overgenerous voice recognition gives you plenty of pleasant sounding "you are correct!" sound effects, that trick you into feeling like you're progressing).

Third, the software, despite being priced at many times what other programs are, actually barely introduces the language.Sure, diligently work through its 3 levels, and you'll learn a number of verbs, some names for food (incidentally, the kinds of foods common in the West, not generally Chinese dishes), and a few grammar particles. But you will remain completely incapable of functioning in China.Sure, they drill you in understanding that "xingqi" means week, but you'll be out of luck as soon as someone says the other word for week, "libai".They focus on "zheli" and "nali", but you will more often hear "Zher" and "Nar" in the North of China. They always say "na" meaning "that", but only once did I hear them say the just as commen "nei."They give the illusion of advanced vocabulary, by teaching you how to say pinetree, but in truth they neglect countless essential words, like "kuai", the colloquial expression for money.

At its price, this program should offer more than Chinese audio and text clumsily slapped on to a stock design. As is, you can get much, much more culturally adapted and in-depth programs for a small fraction of the price. In truth, the Foreign Service's old language tapes and workbooks for learning Chinese, available in the public domain with a google search, is a much better program, and is offered entirely free! Then take less than half the money you would have spent and buy some of the many excellent tools and books Amazon has - books on Chinese characters Reading & Writing Chinese: Simplified Character Edition, flashcards Chinese in a Flash Volume 2 (Tuttle Flash Cards) (Chinese Edition), some of the older programs from the Beijing Foreign Press Elementary Chinese Readers (Volume I), which have nice short stories and excelent instruction in how to make the sounds - and you'll have a much more effective learning program. For extra fun subscribe to ChinesePod, and get 1000s of dialogues, all culturally authentic to Chinese life, and you'll hear how language is actually used in China, and learn the all-important term for the street food vendors. All you'll miss is the pleasant bells and whistles of the Rosetta Stone interface, and the false promise that you can absorb a language as complex and foreign as Chinese as if it were a Western language.

I've been interested in languages for years.I've spent many, many thousands of dollars on language learning aids.I have to say that, although I was very skeptical about buying it, this one is truly amazing.I was afraid to buy it because of the cheesy computer language programs I'd seen years ago.But this software is excellent -- they've come a long way with these programs. The photography is beautiful and the speech analysis software is astounding. You can set the strictness of the speech analyzer from 1 to 10.I set it on the hardest since I want to have a really good accent.Installation was trivial.Very, very easy to install on a Windows XP.They are also good about customer service.

Another nice feature is that you can have multiple users and it will keep track of each person's progress independently.

I had one gripe about the volume control not being located in the software itself.Rather irritating.Apparently it used to be, but is now just controlled outside the application in the volume control settings on your computer. And the specific setting on a Windows computer that it uses is the "Wave" volume setting. The Pimsleur audio cds I have are great in that you acquire an excellent accent and learn to speak well, but it takes some real dedication to get through all the recordings and you don't learn to read. The Capretz "French in Action" series is fantastic, but quite expensive for the entire video program, books, audio, etc. This one, while also somewhat expensive, is a lot of fun.It is highly effective for teaching speech, writing, and reading. It is entertaining in the same way that playing games on the computer can be entertaining.I would say that the only thing it does not teach is conversational skills, but that is why I would suggest using it in conjunction with Pimsleur and other tools.

I use all three of these tools but this one is perhaps the most fun.The "French in Action" video program is also a lot of fun to watch, but the workbook and audio lessons require a fair amount of effort (but are effective).I learn to speak with Pimsleur, to understand spoken French with "French in Action", and learn to write, read, pronounce French and increase my vocabulary with Rosetta Stone.

I'm learning French really fast with Rosetta Stone.I'm glad I finally decided to give it a try.Note that if you purchase the product through them, (as of the date of this writing) they offer free shipping a six month return policy -- no questions asked. It may cost a bit more than getting it through other means, but if you are concerned about whether it is right for you, it may be worth it to check out their guarantee policy. But if you are already sure you want to keep it, it is worthwhile getting it on sale elsewhere. They offer this guarantee because they are pretty confident about their product, and I can see why they would be.

I had nothing but a great experience with this product. I don't know what the other person was using, but it wasn't Navigate 7. True is does reformat the card when you reinstall the software which was a pain, but it did come preinstalled and auto installed, auto loaded, and auto paired with the Bluetooth antenna the first time I used it. I would highly recommend the product and a 1GB or 2GB card so you have room for more than one map and room for music and photos too.

Learn Swedish Now! 9.0 Review

Learn Swedish Now 9.0
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Macintosh version included in the box is an older version (8.1), lagging behind the advertised Windows version (9.0).While I'm thrilled it runs as native "Carbonized" application on Mac OS X, I've run into a few minor glitches: 1) The application help uses Apple's Help Viewer, but the Swedish grammar reference uses QuickHelp, which crashes often and won't print.2) The cool Speech Correctness feature works with my PowerBook G4's built-in microphone, but doesn't work correctly with my higher quality iSight microphone.3) The user interface looks horribly outdated when running in Mac OS X's Aqua interface.
That said, this is the best language software I've seen on a computer.Yes, it includes canned quizzes and games, vocabulary and grammar tutorials, just as you'd expect from educational computer software. However, its primary teaching mode is non-structured and passive, as an interactive digital textbook. It took me a while to understand this. You can read the titles in any order and have it speak any word or phrase.Using your computer's microphone, you can record your voice and compare it against the native speaker's. But it can also analyze your voice based on pitch, frictive, and vowel sounds (to varying degrees of success, but enough to make it useful). So, the usage is completely open-ended (what they call the "Successful Immersion Approach").In a way, this is better than human instruction.I sat there trying to nail the pronunciation of a phrase, repeating it over and over, and I thought: a human would never be so patient! The reward comes not from flashing "congratulations, you passed this quiz!" at your face, but from within yourself as you experience the joy of entering a foreign language with software "training wheels."
The technical problems on the Mac version, while frustrating, are not severe enough to prevent usability.
You have to have self-discipline to get much out of this software. If you're willing to be your own teacher, it provides a deep and individualized medium for learning a new language. However - if you're in a hurry, I recommend the excellent Pimsleur language series (audio CDs) instead. And if you're looking for comprehensive traditional instruction, I'd recommended a book and CD series called "P? svenska!", ISBN 91-7434-429-3 (not available on Amazon.com).

Tascam CDVT1 Portable CD Vocal Trainer Review

Tascam CDVT1 Portable CD Vocal Trainer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got one of these on sale from Musician's Friend, for $80, and its not bad for that price.I can't remember whether I tried running burned disks in it or not.

There are software packages that do something similar as far as changing speed or changing key (Transkriber, Amazing Slow Downer), but you need to be tied to a computer for those. However they have more flexibility, and the sound is slightly better. These packages do not have the rest of the features that this usit has though.

With the Tascam unit, I found that the sound got a bit more warbly the slower you got.Even the software packages have this problem, but not to the same degree it seems. It still worked for what I needed though.

Defining a loop segment is a bit more of a headache if you're not entirely satisfied with where you set your original start and end points. You simply have to start over. With the software packages, they allow you to fine tune the start and end points by moving little pointers.

Navigating the menu system can take a little getting used to.

Overall, I'm glad I got it, but its not the be all to end all.

FSFlyingSchool 2010 Add-On for Microsoft Flight Simulator X FSX and FS2004 Review

FSFlyingSchool 2010 Add-On for Microsoft Flight Simulator X FSX and FS2004
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you enjoy flying with Microsoft Flight Simulator X (FSX) or FS2004 then this one is for you.

This product provides a group of different instructors who ride with you and talk to you all through the flight, letting you know what you are doing wrong and right.

There is a long list of features you can see for yourself of course.

I was sold on the first version, but they have massively increased what this program can do in 2009 and now in 2010.

The big additions include instructors who now actually talk to you about the traffic that is out there and will warn you if you are getting too close either in the air or on the ground.

They will also give you all kinds of tips on how to use your instruments to navigate better and more accurately.

All in all - a huge leap forward from an already great product.

I never fly without this add-on for Flight Simulator because it feels so much more like the real thing and really, really does improve my flying skills.

Well done team!

Rosetta Stone V3: Chinese Level 1-2 Set Review

Rosetta Stone V3: Chinese Level 1-2 Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought version 2 of Rosetta Stone Mandarin.I found it difficult to learn with it, but I figured I should trust them and keep trying.I found it annoying that version 2 had no real rhyme or reason, and I wasn't sure what it was trying to teach me.Add to that, the voice recognition was a little poor (especially with the headset that came with it).

I don't know WHY I decided to splurge and buy version 3, but man, what a difference!Aside from the nicer looking GUI, it does something really useful: it organizes a lesson plan for you.And TELLS you what the plan is trying to do.Oh, and even more importantly, it actually include "Nihao" and "Zai Jian" in the 1st lesson (V2 -- you'd go through like 8 levels before you learned any useful conversation).

So far, I'm enjoying it more. The lessons are broken up into pieces with an estimate of how long it will take. Also, it now piece-meals information. Before, with the very long sentences in v2 (long, hard-to-pronounce sentences in the FIRST lesson, yet!), you kind of guessed what it was trying to teach you. With V3, it's more explicit with new activities like "Fill in the blank" where you chose the response.

The voice recognition is FAR superior and the headset provided is _very_ nice.I still wish the visualisation of your voice was easier to interpret and I wish I could select a part of the clip to practice with, but otherwise, it's so much nicer.During the pronunciation exercises, you can pause and go to the pronunciation lab to work on your pronunciation before getting marked on it.

Overall, I love this version. It actually organizes your learning, if you want (you still have the option to pick and chose), according to your goals (e.g., you can say you aren't interested in reading/writing at all and it won't push it on you).Oh, and I chose to learn reading/writing -- the chinese character drill section actually reviews a word one character at a time so one has an actual chance of learning now.

Good work, Rosetta Stone!

Rosetta Stone V2: Chinese, Level 1 Review

Rosetta Stone V2: Chinese, Level 1
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've only been using this for a short time. One great feature of good language learning products is the ability to compare your pronunciation with that of native speakers. Since intonation is critical when speaking Chinese, I expected this would be of tremedous help learning Chinese. However, I happen to have a deep male voice, and the only voice they provide for comparison is a woman with a high voice. As a result, I cannot match that voice print. They mention this issue in the fine print. I think having only one native speaker to compare to is a problem with this software; they should provide multiple native speakers so you can pick the one closest to your own natural voice for comparison. I very much like the approach except for this.

Magix Music Studio 10 Deluxe Review

Magix Music Studio 10 Deluxe
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been spoiled by FL Studio 5.0 and my demo copy of Project 5. A friend of mine was going to let go of his copy of Sonar 4 because he just bought Sonar 5. But he hasn't gotten around to it yet, and in my impatience I ventured into the software aisle of Comp USA looking for an inexpensive tool that I could use to automate the VST control interface of FL Studio while I lay down some audio tracks. I came across Magix Music Studio 10 Deluxe. By the looks of the screenshots and the promises on the box, as well as what few reviews I've found on the product, I decided to give it a shot.

I loaded it up and quickly discovered, however, that this kludge of a product had been literally sawed in two. The audio multi-track recording environment is one environment, while the MIDI and VSTi/DXi multi-track recording environment is a COMPLETELY SEPERATE PROGRAM!! Can you believe it? Yes, you can record audio, by loading WAV files but possibly in realtime also, within the MIDI recording environment. But all those nifty audio effects must be loaded up into the seperate program.

To make things worse, there does not appear to be a way to specify the default MIDI output device, so the MIDI Out on my MIDI controller is being used as the default device for MIDI playback because it's the first thing it finds. And if THAT wasn't bad enough, trying to use ASIO doesn't work for me because the ASIO drivers keep giving me messageboxes saying "cannot use clock rate of 44khz" or whatever. (I guess this is because my sound card--an Audigy--is set up for 48kHz.)

And if you're like me, you'll throw up over your computer monitor when you see the remnants of an 80's/90's-looking user interface filling up half of the product's windows. It still uses pixellated two-color toolbar icons that remind me of the days of System 6.x on the Macintosh.

I have not done enough tinkering to give it a full evaluation, right now I'm still recovering from the shock factor of how utterly useless this thing is. I should have gone with Sonar 4 Home Studio on the rack there, or Cakewalk Music Creator, or drove over to Guitar Center to pick up Cubase SE, or something, anything other than this.

Heck, the Voyetra offering looked to be better than this.

Rosetta Stone V3: Korean Level 1 with Audio Companion Review

Rosetta Stone V3: Korean Level 1 with Audio Companion
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
During my tour in the Army I spent a year in Korea. I learned a little Korean and was impressed by how easy the language was.
I wanted to learn another language but didn't want to do it the conventional way or go back to school to do it. Then I saw the Rosetta Stone program and tried their demo out. I was impressed at how easily their process worked.

Don't get me wrong, this still involves work, you can't learn it a couple of times thru but the way it's presented with pictures, spoken word and your interaction with voice print recognition makes it a really fun way to work. I enjoy every session I have with it and find myself saying words at work or around the house and to the dog. He seems to think I'm nuts! Anyway, I also realized how badly I was mispronouncing the words. The pronunciation lab (at least that's what I call it) shows voice prints and inflections. Once you can master the voice print and inflection you are saying the words the way they should be pronounced. They have even made this part of it fun. The Korean ideograms are also show atop the pictures and with all the lessons.

I just bought the first level to see if I liked the program. I do so I'll get the rest of the programs as I need them.

I believe you really can learn any language this way. It sure beats any other process in schools that I've used.

Rosetta Stone V3: Hebrew Level 1 with Audio Companion Review

Rosetta Stone V3: Hebrew Level 1 with Audio Companion
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Despite serious flaws, this course is an efficient way to learn most of what I need to know. With the inductive method which Rosetta Stone calls Dynamic Immersion, all content is in Hebrew, forcing the student to think in Hebrew and allowing the formation of hypotheses, which are refined as more material is presented. I found this process of discovery both effective and fun.

Rosetta Stone courses are almost completely devoid of cultural content. The same photographs and the same words and sentences (translated, of course) are used for all languages. Aside from not teaching the student important cultural details, this approach ignores the fact that language affects how people think, and vice versa. Compare this to the French in Action course of Pierre Capretz, in which friends are sitting around an outdoor table and the first person to leave faces each of the others individually to say "au revoir," or to Modern Spanish (Harcourt, Brace & World, 1960), in which a boss tells his secretary that he never goes to communion and she replies that she always does, and we thus learn something about unspoken communication and the dynamics of power and sex in the Spanish-speaking world.

I reluctantly accept this lack of cultural information and the business model which makes it unlikely that we will ever see it in Rosetta Stone courses. Self-study cannot fully substitute for taking a class from a native speaker.

It seems to me that this course is not sufficiently "active." Most of the exercises are multiple-choice, in which Hebrew text and spoken word must be matched with pictures. I am not really forced to retrieve the word or phrase from my memory. I can work around this limitation a little bit, by spending some time repeating the phrases before advancing to the next screen, or by looking at a picture and figuring out the text before I look at it, but the course does not force me to do those things.

Rosetta Stone ads disparage flash cards, unfairly, I think. Flash cards are a great example of adaptive learning, in that I can decide how long to look at a card and where to replace it in the deck, based on whether I got the right answer and how much difficulty I had. The only way this course uses adaptive learning is in deciding when (immediately or on some future date) an entire lesson will be repeated. This approach really falls short in the writing (spelling) lessons. They consist of 6 screens, in each of which I must type 1 to 4 complete sentences. If I make a mistake, the first incorrect letter is highlighted. Eventually, I get that letter right, and then the next incorrect one is highlighted. When I finally get everything right, the software immediately erases what I just wrote and moves me onto the next sentence, destroying most of what little recollection I had of my correct answer. Absent inconvenient work-arounds, I often do not get to practice what I have just learned, until the next time I do the same or a different writing exercise.

It would not have been difficult for Rosetta Stone to make the writing lessons much more effective: if something takes me more than one try, leave my final, correct, answer on the screen until I push an OK button. Then give me that sentence again. When I get it right twice in a row, give me another sentence to spell, but then repeat the one that gave me problems. Continue the repetition, increasingly infrequently, as I reinforce my mastery.

The pronunciation exercises are a useful opportunity to practice speaking but are not very effective in detecting good or bad pronunciation. With the same setting of how strict the voice recognition should be, I sometimes have to repeat good pronunciation several times before it is accepted, and then, a few frames later, I badly flub my line and it is accepted.

I did not find the optional Audio Companion, CDs that you can listen to in your car, very useful. Dynamic immersion with no visual information does not work well for me, and I need not to be distracted while I am driving.

The course has an option to choose whether letters are displayed with or without vowel points and dageshes, the little marks that are below, above, or inside some letters to help with pronunciation. That is useful: pointed text is essential for students at my level of competence, but most Hebrew writing is unpointed. I wish there were another option, to change to a script (handwriting) font, pointed or unpointed. Script letters look different from printed ones, and it is important to learn them.

Initially (in 2008), I had numerous problems with the software. The Rosetta Stone technical support people were quite helpful, though I sometimes wished the development folks would release their bug-fixes more quickly. Version 3 seems to have been brought to market before it was quite ready. For the most part, everything is now fixed. I would recommend that anyone buying a Rosetta Stone course make sure that all available updates are applied, which is automatic if you check a box and have an Internet connection.

Despite its flaws, this course is working well for me. When I decide to study another language, I will probably buy a Rosetta Stone course for it.
