Star Wars Republic Commando Review

Star Wars Republic Commando
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Republic Commando is a fun, albeit short, game. When I heard it was being developed, I really wasn't interested -- the premise didn't enthuse me.But after trying the demo, I was very impressed. The squad-based play is simple, but effective, and the AI is very well done.Aside from a few instances where I thought the AI should be behaving differently, your computer-controlled squadmates are very capable and realistic for non-human players. In fact, during the few sequences in the game in which you are seperated from them, I felt...alone.The lack of their presence was really felt in the flow of the game.Very well done. The gameplay is fast paced and exciting (though a bit short), the voice acting is superb, and I was surprised by how long into the game I was before dialog from the squadmates repeated -- there's enough of it that you'll play awhile before hearing a line repeated. There's also a fair amount of humor in the game. And the characters of your squadmates are also well done -- they each have a distinct personallity, which makes the game more enjoyable.I finished the game tonight and am ready to start playing through it again.A lot of fun.

Final Draft 5.0 with Syd Field's Screenwriting Workshop Video Review

Final Draft 5.0 with Syd Field's Screenwriting Workshop Video
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Agents, studios, instructors or just about anyone who reviews a screenplay will expect it in "standard" screenplay format. There are dozens of rules regarding font, typeface, margins, indentations, grammer, syntax etc. On top of that you need to write the screenplay iteself!
Enter Final Draft.
It takes the work out of formatting, remembering what goes where and what syntax to use and leaves you to do what you originally intended to : write screenplays.
Final Draft automatically lays out your pages correctly. It indents slug lines, scene descriptions, speech etc. perfectly. It even ensures that you can't hit Enter twice without selecting something new to put into the script (i.e. a scene heading). The package is easy to use right out of the box. Take half an hour to get used to it and you're off. However, if you've never taken a screenwriting class or read a book or two, it might get a little confusing. The online help is pretty good, but it is basic. If this is your first screenwriting attempt may I suggest the Screenwriter's Bible (Trottier) to help you understand what Final Draft is trying to do.
A feature that I find really amusing is the script readback feature. It allows you to assign computer "voices" to different characters in your script. The speech synthesizing has a LONG way to go, but it's very funny to listen to.
Final Draft organizes index cards for you (if you use them to manage your scenes) and can print them out on card stock. Other neat little features include dual dialogue, which is very easy to use, tracking of changes, script "locking" for portions of a script, character name database, spellchecker, online script registration and, of course, the accomanying video (worth viewing, for sure). If you've tried using a standard word processor, even with your own templates, you will feel as though you've died and gone to heaven.
Final Draft is an excellent, and should be essential, part of any screenwriter's suite of tools.

With Final Draft, screenwriting is easy. The Script Reader text-to-speech feature assigns different voices to different characters and allows you to listen to your script read aloud. It's like having a table reading without hiring live actors. Complete with full Internet capability, Final Draft lets you e-mail a scene to your writing partner, or the whole script to a producer. iRacing 1-Year New-Member Subscription Review

iRacing 1-Year New-Member Subscription
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're looking to have a great experience with online racing, and you want to know what a track truly looks like from the cockpit, then this is for you. Many would say it's pricey, but you really do get what you pay for.

Anyone who has been involved in online gaming knows that there are a few things that can ruin the whole experience. In online racing you have those that come in, wreck everyone, laugh, and leave. Well, with the iRacing (FIRST) sanctioning body, this problem has been removed. People here are friendly, respectful (for the most part), and the staff take their role of creating a "professional" environment seriously.

As for the graphics, you won't find much better. Although this is a bit of a subjective topic, there is probably a unanimous agreement that the tracks are spot-on accurate. The signage, bumps, curbs, and marks have been laser scanned and digitized to create the most realistic experience out there. These are not created in someone's home office based on info off the web. These look and feel realistic!

The physics of the cars are incredible; however, they're not exactly like driving a real car. We're never going to be able to feel the g-forces or true feedback from a brake pedal, so there is a bit of unrealisticness (is that a word) here. However, you will have a tough time ever playing one of your boxed up simulators again after this. Their press reports say that their cars' physics are perfect, but I've never seen that statement from a pro driver...it only is said through their press releases. Still, you won't be disappointed.

The competition is where you're going to truly start seeing the major difference between this and other sims. This is not a CD that comes to you in the mail, you install it, and that's what you run offline with. Everything is run via a web-based console which fires up a program on your machine. You can run all the solo practice sessions, or solo time trials that you want, but you must be connected to the web. If you want to run a qualifying or race session, you will be on track with other real-life people. There are no computer AI cars. You will grow to absolutely love this!

Don't worry about not knowing which server to connect to anymore. These servers are ALL run from iRacing's service. You simply say you want to race, and when the race begins, you are grouped with others at your ability (iRating) level. Sometimes you will be the leader of the pack, and others you will be pushing hard to keep up. Every session is a learning experience.

The only reason I couldn't give this 5 stars, as bad as I wanted to, was because of this final (and sometimes the best) quality. This product is constantly under development. It is constantly being improved. Major enhancements come every 3 months at the end of each full season. Minor enhancements come at fairly regular intervals. Tracks are constantly being added, and tweaks to the competition are always under consideration.

Because of this, sometimes the product feels unfinished; it is, and always will be. This, at times, can become frustrating when you see a problem and there are so many solutions proposed in the forums, but new problems sometimes are created. However, the staff is there! The forums have not been left behind by the creators. If you type a post, they will read it, and often respond.

Your voice matters here! You're buying more than a game. You're buying an experience unlike any other online game you've been a part of. If you're a racing fan, you owe it to yourself to at least give this a try!

The Sagara Family is a brilliantly done game, full of great artwork and great stories. There are plenty of choices to make as you play the game, so unlocking all of the artwork can take a fair amount of time and dedication.Which makes the replay value well worth it.There's plenty of humor and certainly the main character and other characters are very sympathetic, making this more than a game to just click through. You actually have to consider your decisions.

Featuring animated cut scenes and voice acting, this is certain worth a purchase for fans.

The software that utilizes the headset/microphone directly into the computer works relatively well (in a totally silent room). However, this "mobile" version (where you dictate into a digital recorder then upload into your computer) did not work at all.I called SoftScan tech support and not only could they not help me, I was told if I called again, I would be charged for another tech session. I have since learned that Version 8 (Mobile) was marketed exclusively to AMAZON customers (and not the general public) and that the company has decided to drop this version because of problems with the digital recorder's software that cannot be fixed.

I won't say this is the best game I've ever played, but it is the most fun.I'm not a kid, I'm in my twenties, and I love the books.I was able to finish this game pretty fast, but I still continue to play it again and again because it is so much fun.It stays very true to the spirit of Harry Potter, if not the book itself. The only thing I found disappointing is that Harry does everything, so there's not much interaction with Ron or Hermione for instance.

Learn Russian Now! 9.0 Review

Learn Russian Now 9.0
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I approached the russian language under two very different methods: this ultra modern CD-ROM and the old fashioned printed course, a.k.a. book. I am sorry to say that the Learn Russian Now! CD ROM, although impressive and nice, is not definitely the ideal tool for beginners. Someone will probably enjoy this CDROM if he is nearly an expert in russian language and wants to practice conversation and hearing skills. For the beginner, it can be frightening. Open the course and the first suggested section will take you to an intimidating 4 minute dialogue in russian which is supposed to be your first lesson using basic russian structures... basic for whom? Then, you are supposed to review what you just saw. Nice. Lessons are organized thematically (restaurants, how to catch a cab, around Saint Petesburg, etc.) and not by level of difficulty or expertise, so each one of them combines every imaginable verb tense (present, past, future, etc.) and language structure. This means lenghty monologues with incomprehensible russian chatter until your jaw drops or you turn off the computer. I simply could not learn russian using this method, only memorize some useful phrases, but that does NOT mean you are learning the languague.
Then I swtiched to the printed, step-by-step, old fashoned book (New Penguin Russian course VERY recommended!) and I'm glad I did. After dedicating one hour every other day to study my book, I am speaking russian after two months... and practicing online with russian friends:)

Izotope Music & Speech Cleaner Review

Izotope Music & Speech Cleaner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been polishing up my home movies before posting them onto YouTube and this program has done a great job of getting the audio just right. I have a lot of outdoor footage and can remove the unwanted noise very easily. The interface is very easy to use. You basically tell the program what kind of noise you have and there is a slider the adjust the amount of that effect you want to apply. It is that easy. There are also different mastering effects you can run it through that sharpen up the sound considerably. They are also very easy to use. I had one video that has music playing that was picked up from my camcorder's mic. It sounded way better after I ran it through the enhance filter.

This is a must have for anyone who wants to improve audio in their home movies.

The Secret Files: Tunguska Review

The Secret Files: Tunguska
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It was a GREAT story with well-done graphics and scenery BUT (and these are big buts for me) there were two things about this game that annoyed me.

The dialogue was bad and the voice acting worse. If I understand it right, English wasn't this game's first language but it should've been the responsibility of the English speakers to get the tone right. The voice actors? Well, I don't know whether to blame them or again the script writers.

And for the puzzles, some of them just made no logical sense and I had to go to a hints site.

I did like this game a lot and I look forward to the sequel. Hopefully, they will work on improving the script and the actors.

If you can tolerate weak dialogue and bad acting...I recommend this game. The story and graphics are GREAT!!

Lord of the Rings: Return of the King Review

Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is absolutely THE best game I've ever played. I'm not huge into games, but I'm a big fan of Lord of the Rings, and received a demo disk of the game from a friend. Our behemoth of a computer couldn't handle it, so I was ecstatic when I received a laptop as a big gift one year, and gleefully discovered the demo worked. This is proof positive that marketing gimmicks like demo disks work, because the thing prompted me to shell out $20 for this big guy...and I don't regret a penny of it.

On the Two Towers "wimpy" DVD, there was a preview for this, and one of the game developers said "You won't play this game and know everything that went on in [previously unreleased] Return of the King, but you might play this game and FEEL everything that went on." He's absolutely right.

As you already know, you start with three paths. You can play any path from the beginning, and/or if you get tired of playing Sam, you can go and take the Path of the Wizard, or King. You have no option about who to play on the Wizard and Ringbearer paths, but let me give you some advise: when starting on the Path of the King use Legolas. I know, it doesn't fit for the Elf to be leading the trio through PotD, but he's the best fighter to start out with. From there, you go on to fight the King of the Dead (tough), with escape from the Paths as a second part of the level. Both are arguably the hardest levels in the game. Then you journey to Gondor, fighting hundreds of orcs and uruks (if you stick around) at the Southern Gate, then encountering more hoards of uruks and Haradrim on the Pelennor. Then you must do battle at the Black Gate, which shouldn't be TOO hard if you have saved and earned combos wisely.

Gandalf must first assist the Ents in destroying the last elements of Saruman's rule, then he goes to Gondor, where he fights on the Top of the Wall to keep the forces of Mordor at bay. When that ultimately fails, he runs below and fights uruks and huge trolls in The Courtyard.

Sam must Escape Osgiliath with Mr. Frodo, then rescue him from the throes of Shelob's Lair, then follow him to the tower of Cirith Ungol, and rescue him from the orcs that captured him. Finally, he must assist Frodo in defeating Gollum in The Crack of Doom.

You absolutely must begin on easy, or beginner level; you will find that hard and challenging enough! Even so, there will be times when you'll want to perform the killing move "Computer bane" on your computer while playing this. It's insane how tough it is to beat sometimes. But if a rank amateur like me can complete it, you can! Also, unless you have a super-computer you'll want to lower the graphics settings so that you can have smooth game play. It won't make a huge difference in the appearance. It helps, because I didn't figure this out until I was trying to escape the PotD after beating the King of the Dead. Running through the mists make you go slower on high graphics, but the surroundings collapse on a time basis, because you go slow, you'll die.

It's true, you can't do a lot of exploring, and there's not a whole lot of secrets you can go back through and discover. The cheats only work after you complete the game (cle-ver!), but they give them to you. (So why do the cheat sites list them, I wonder?)

Also, if violence is of concern to you, you can bet there's a lot here. Nothing worse than you find in the trilogy ... sometimes less. I do not like the gory, bloody, violent video games, but I do enjoy this one. Blood is nonexistent, except for the occasional dark stuff that might fly out of an orc when you smack him with your sword. There's no beheadings, and most of the enemies you fight are very non-human, either spiders or orcs. Towards the end, you do fight heavily-armored Haradrim, which are human. In one of the killing moves, Aragorn kicks the human to the ground and then knifes him in the head. It's a war game, so it's to be expected. But it's about the good guys kicking the bad guys' butt, and after a hard day's work, sometimes it's a little stress-relieving.

Bonus features include interviews with the cast, stills from the movie, stills from video game production, two bonus levels (Palantir of Saruman, and Palantir of Sauron...you'll probably want to use cheat codes for them) and bonus characters Faramir, Pippin, and Merry. You could say Frodo is an extra character, because you can't play him until you've defeated the game. Why the geniuses at EA Games didn't put a playable Eowyn/Dernhelm is BEYOND ME.

You can also use (or in my case, purchase) a game pad, and plug it in to your computer, and play with two. It's often frustrating to play with two, when one is low on health and the person who is high on health accidentally picks up the health. ("YOU TOOK THAT ON PURPOSE! THAT WAS MINE!") But it's also fun. Once you defeat combo (you have to go through the entire game again on combo -- single play defeat doesn't count for combo play) game play, you can play the Palantir levels, or play Gandalf and Pippin on the Top of the Wall, recreating the movie scene.

Again, the game is tough, and you'll get discouraged. But don't worry, you'll get through it and have fun in the process.

I love this game, just like I love Lord of the Rings, and I think if you like one, you'll like the other. You'll love it. Buy it. (Now can we PLEASE get the Two Towers game put out on PC?!)

The Lord Of The Rings: Shadows Of Angmar Review

The Lord Of The Rings: Shadows Of Angmar
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been playing MMORPGs (Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games) now for about three years. My MMO gaming experience includes Star Wars Galaxies, World of Warcraft, Guild Wars and Lord of the Rings Online.I thought I would post a simple review of the game that was posted simply in terms of POSITIVES and NEGATIVES, from the perspective of a veteran MMORPG player.

POSITIVES
---------

* Graphics.Turbine did an excellent job creating the world of middle earth.Immersion is NOT a problem in this game.

* Character customization. You can modify hair styles, facial features, skin color, eye color, and much more.In addition, the ability to use dye in order to customize your appearance is nice. Also, you don't have the problem with "clown armor" that games like World of Warcraft has. That is, armor that is multicolored and un-coordinated.Using dye, you can make any armor set look sleek.

* Quests. There are so many quests in this game that I feel like I will never run out!I never find myself endlessly grinding for XP.Turbine did a good job with the quests and the associated story lines.

* Crafting. The crafting system is terrific.Albeit, it is expensive to level your skills up.For this reason, I usually recommend that someone level their character first, THEN focus on crafting.

* Server populations. There are plenty of people playing this game. And the people that play seem to be much more mature than other populations on other games.

* Sound. The battle sounds are SUPERB.Battles sound like swords, axes, shields, maces, etc. are actually swinging and contacting each other.

* Limited presence of magic. Many fantasy games are heavy into the magic aspect of the game.Consistent with the lore of Middle Earth, magic has a presence, but it is limited. You will not find a super-class of characters that are all-powerful arcanists. This is a nice change.Rather, swords, maces, axes, bows, crossbows, and clubs reign supreme. There is a cloth-wearing class that dabbles in magic, but again... it is limited.

* Potential for future expansion. If you look at the world map, the area that the current game world is occupying is only a small percentage of Middle Earth. There is tremendous potential for opening up new areas and dungeons.NEGATIVES
---------

* Hardware demands.Unless your computer is state-of-the-art, you will likely find yourself playing in the medium graphics quality setting.

* Customer service from Turbine.I spend quite a bit of time on the Turbine website and I just don't feel like they are communicating with us like other gaming companies communicate with their player base.Turbine is quick to share lore and other items of a Middle Earth nature, but they rarely comment on errors, future expansions, etc.I just don't feel like I'm in touch with the developers like I did when I played Warcraft.

* Inability to make significant addon's for the game. Many other games allow you to generate new mapping software or completely new user interfaces.Turbine allows you to skin the user interface, but nothing more.So it seems that the community will not be permitted to generate many addons for the game.Even though I do not feel that I need to many addons for LOTRO, I do like having that option.

* Mounts. The mounts in the game need a bit of work. The animation is far from perfect.I feel as if mounts were an afterthought addition to the game.My character has a mount, and while I do enjoy it, I feel as if I am dismounted too easily by random mobs.Furthermore, the speed boost is not tremendous.

* Demands on servers.Sometimes the servers turn down your graphic settings on YOUR end so that it can improve server performance during busy periods. This can be frustrating, but isn't intolerable.

This game is a 2 in 1 deal. I think this game is good for ages from 5-16. The only problem is each game finishes pretty fast but it's still good. On a 1 to 10 I give it an 8.

TeLL me More Chinese - Beginner, Intermediate & Advanced Review

TeLL me More Chinese - Beginner, Intermediate & Advanced
Average Reviews:

Wow...I should have heeded the warning of that other 1-star review.

Let me give you some background on what I was looking for.I started out with "Instant Immersion" Chinese audio cd's from my local bookstore.I didn't like not being able to SEE the word I was pronouncing and it was very frustrating.I wanted to be able to read and learn, not just regurgitate.

Next I picked up a Living Language audio cd Chinese set. This time it had a book to go with it.It's pretty cool and I learned a lot very quickly through the book and the cd's.

But I thought...there must be a really good CD-ROM out there to help someone learn Chinese.Searching through the Internet I found a cool flashcard program. You could select a category (restaurant, animals, numbers, etc.) and it would show you a flashcard of pin yin or hanzi for you to type in the "english".If you got it wrong you click and it shows you the English. It drills it into your head very well and I liked it a lot.

Well, I thought that was a start, but there must be something really interactive and amazing out there.I clicked through the pages of Amazon to find one...skipping all of the "immersion" ones and found this.Tell Me More Chinese.

It sounded really good.It had interactive quizzes, crosswords...lots of interesting bits. And an intriguing voice recognition technology to make sure you are pronouncing properly...with a microphone included!

Okay...so I've spent the last couple of hours playing with it and it didn't take me long to get that sinking feeling...that I just blew $175 bucks on something I'll never use again.

The reason, as the other review here alludes to...is that there is no instruction!!!You boot it up and you can basically do 2 things right away. You can look at a very long list of seemingly random Chinese words (no "wo" or "ni" or anything that would make sense to learn immediately). What you do is repeat the word into the microphone after you hear it.The program gives you a score. This gets very boring...very quickly.

Next are the activities.Well...they didn't seem available for level 1.Hmm.Okay, so I'll click on dialogues. They give you a word in pinyin, with the audio, and you have 3 pinyin choices to match it up with. The only problem is...there has been no instruction for you to be able to know what ANY of the words mean! It's like going into a language course and on the first day being given a long quiz to answer. There is no point.I know nothing!TEACH ME SOMETING!So eventually I realized that if you click an American flag icon at the bottom of the screen then the pin yin converts to English.Only problem with this is that the original word...and the 3 answers...don't match up to my mind!An example...I was given a word that meant "enemy"...and my three options were "drawing", "chrysanthemum", or "to break".

My first question would be...what does a drawing, a chrysanthemum or breaking have to do with "enemy"?And for another thing...why are any of these words at all relevant to A BEGINNER LEARNING CHINESE!?!!?!?!?!!!???

Next I moved on to the "Resources" section. It has a glossary...basically a Chinese/English dictionary with clickable audio.Neat.Also it has a grammar section with lessons.FINALLY...I'll be able to learn something. So I clicked on the "numbers" section.Well, it does give you the numbers one to nine, and then quickly moves to very large numbers. The problem is it gives you incredibly difficult and long example sentences such as "This stadium has a capacity of 35,000 people."

Which if you want to know, in Chinese looks like this:

"Zhe ge tiyuchang keyi rogna sanwanwuqian wei guanzhong."

Umm...sure.Why the hell is that in a section for beginners? And why is that the VERY FIRST THING YOU LEARN!?!!?!!??!??!??

Nothing about this program makes any sense. It seems to me like they just came up with a voice recognition technology and quickly slapped together a bunch of crap around it, boxed it up, and sold it to unsuspecting people like me.

My search for a half-decent "Learn Chinese" CD-ROM continues...in the meantime I'll go back to my Living Language audio cd's and coursebook.

Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark Review

Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Cinematic, flashy, epic, and thoroughly satisfying - Hordes of the Underdark is the truly phenomenal culmination of the Neverwinter Nights franchise. While player reviews were mixed in regards to the original NWN campaign and the first expansion campaign, I have seen little if anything for Hordes except high praise. It brings to the table both a well written and dramatic campaign and an avalanche of new game features like feats, prestige classes and skills and the much-awaited Epic Levels - expanding the game from 20 class levels to 40 - all of it in an extremely smooth and meticulously produced package.
The official Hordes campaign is not only my most enjoyable Neverwinter Nights play experience yet, but also ranks as the single most satisfying RPG game experience I've ever had. If you haven't ever played Neverwinter Nights, now is the time to buy NWN Gold and Hordes and get down to business learning this fantastic game.
The plot of the Hordes campaign is, on the one hand, the same plot every RPG has - "save the world." However there's nothing formulaic about the plot of Hordes. Bioware has made a compelling story that you will have trouble walking away from. The story is complex and well written, taking you to many well-portrayed locations classic to the D&D genre, such as Undermountain, the Underdark, and Beholder and Illithid cities. These locations are moody, alien, dark and disturbing in a truly tangible way. You will not explore these locations *wondering* how you should react - you *will* react, tangibly and viscerally, to their disturbing lighting and ailen architecture.
In addition, throughout the campaign Bioware has made extensive use of the new cinematic camera features added by SOU, bringing a sense of big screen urgency to this adventure. No more reading in a little text box about how important it is you undertake this quest. Instead you watch beautiful, dramatic, in-game cutscenes that show you horrors being unleashed upon the world that only you can stop. And as you approach the close of the story, you are not wondering how you should feel, or fiddling with your equipment because you're bored. You will forget game mechanics and move urgently towards the resolution of the story.
When all is said and done, you will be left with a character that is roughly 25th-30th level. And you will truly see your character as an epic hero - not becuase of a number on your character sheet, or because of feats and skills you chose, and not because of your epic loot. (And there's plenty of awesome loot if you like that.) You will see your character as an epic hero because of your vivid memories of the epic *actions* that your character has performed. "Level 30" will seem meaningless compared to looking at your character and remembering an entire city looking to you as it's only hope - and actually leading that city to *defeat* an entire army in order to realize that hope.
Having now played the OC and tried multiple game features, I have to say that this expansion has an extremely professional and clean feel to it. I was troubled by only a single bug during my play through of the campaign - a moment when a cutscene didn't fire perfectly. This certainly didn't stop my game play. Every feature added has a very polished feel, as if a great deal of care and attention was placed on each of the new game additions. The smallest features, such as the new icons used to represent added feats, are attractive and show care in design.
Henchman AI is much improved in Hordes, and you can now take 2 of them with you while you travel. Playing on Hardcore difficulty, I had a henchman die only once. Countless times my party-mates contributed smart decisions to battles. For example Deekin would use his Fear spell only on foes that were vulnerable to it, often with great results. NPCs that join your party have been given a *lot* of side chatter, comments, and extra interactions with either each other or you - and it's often hilarious. You will definitely NOT feel like you are alone on this adventure with a mute robot that often dies.
I've commented so much on the OC that I don't have much space to comment on the multitude of other great features. Six new Prestige Classes are added, and judging from the Bioware forums they're all a huge hit for different reasons. Many new feats, some epic and some not, were added. Weapon and armorcrafting skills now allow you to modify the appearance of your items - so you can pick between a chain shirt having all those metal loops, or that leather trim. Cloth, leather and metal dyes allow you to completely customize the colors of your armor and helmets. Intimidate and Bluff skills allow new and different types of social interactions. Robes have been added to the game and they look amazing. Items in your inventory can now be the target for spells and items, allowing you to poison your blade, or cast spells on your items that give them new properties.
After NWN's rocky life story, HotU has erased any doubts about Bioware and their commitment to quality. They demonstrate so many gifts and talents in Hordes - care, precision, smart design - and most importantly, an essential understanding of what an RPG gamer wants when they sit down to play. Bioware has really hit the nail on the head with this great campaign: it leaves you feeling like a true hero from myth or legend.
In an era of RPGs that largely disappoint, Bioware has produced a classic - a resplendent gem that is impressive on so many levels that is almost impossible to rate the game high enough. If you have any love for 3E D&D or for NWN, you simply must buy this expansion.

Product Description:
Neverwinter Nights' first expansion, Shadows of Undrentide, was certainly an engrossing tale, and a great addition to the universe, but for how much I enjoyed that adventure it pales in comparison to Hordes of the Underdark. Sure, this expansion looks slightly better than the last, and manages to add in an assortment of new goodies for level-up junkies like myself, but what really makes this game for me is that it revolves around the Drow and all the dark creatures of the D&D universe. You just can't help but love Mind Flayers and those evil elf beeatches. If you managed to miss out on Shadows, you should do yourself a favor and make sure you check out Hordes, as it represents some of the best storytelling going on in the PC world. Even if you don't care about the plot, you can always just make some crazy powerful characters and tear it up.

Apple Logic Studio Review

Apple Logic Studio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So you want a whole music studio for under $500? What are you, some kind of crazy Mac user?

Apple's generous price drop for this version of what many consider to be the ultimate music tool (and I'm one of those) has removed any excuse one may have for putting off this purchase any longer. Meaning they cut the price in half and added twice the features of the original: Not only do you get a leaner, meaner and much easier to use version of Logic Pro, but they've thrown in updated versions of Soundtrack Pro and Compressor (previously only available with Final Cut), a live performance module called MainStage, all five Garageband Jam Pack titles, WaveBurner 1.5 for CD mastering, new effects such as Delay Designer .... all you need supply is lots of time and about 45 gigs of hard drive space.

As a happy user of Logic since version 6, I found the upgrade (available for just under $200) easy to grow into, especially being used to Apple's other pro apps, and really appreciated the addition of Soundtrack Pro 2, whose predecessor I'd used more for track mastering. The newer interface for Logic is more self contained now, with sliding panels replacing all those open windows you used to have to deal with ... although that is still an option if you're a person who thrives on complexity. Now you can look at both the Arrange Window and Matrix Edit (now called "Piano Roll", how quaint) in the same window, just roll it in and out as needed. Same with Audio Mixer, Score View, Hyper Edit, etc. In keeping with this more streamlined method, some of the tools are more hidden away which, along with other changes, I'm quickly getting used to. Another rollaway panel gives you access to instrument settings (and other audio resources) by way of a Soundtrack-like browser -- don't like that piano sound and don't feel like scrolling through all of them? Just pick one off the list, and it's there!

Another nice feature you'll see right away is some handy standard templates: Now, instead of trying to figure out how many blank tracks, and what kind, you may need for a certain project, just click one of the template buttons and you're on your way. You can easily customize them if you're a seasoned user. The one that has this user the most excited is the orchestral template ..... a whole symphony orchestra, ordered the same as it would be in a classical score, with instruments already loaded and regions just waiting for note entry. Now that's power. You can transcribe classical works using Logic's score editor, which by the way will also print out scores should you ever hire live musicians for your compositions.

One thing that will make Logic veterans happy is, now you don't need the USB XS-Key to be plugged in to run the software. Upgraders only need it to install, then just unplug it and drop it in the box. New users won't even have to deal with it. They don't know what they've missed, and they're better off.

In summary, Logic is the solution for the Mac-based musician, as far as composing, arranging, recording, looping, producing, scoring, sound designing, whatever-ing in an audio capacity. No messy cables and reels of tape all over the place like in the old days, just launch and bring musical dreams to life. I can't emphasize enough what a good deal this is (without sounding like a salesman), and once you get over a slight learning curve you realize the possibilities are virtually boundless for what you'll come up with. Just be aware: this ain't no Garageband. Logic is for the serious musician or music producer for whom music matters above most other things. This is what obsessed people do with their time. If this sounds like you, well, you owe it to yourself to make the most logical investment.
