Hi there,

My name's Chris Dahl, I'm the product manager for Nitro PDF Professional here at ARTS PDF.

It's unfortunate that we have to make a post of commercial nature here, however we've recently noticed a number of bogus reviews appearing that seem to have been written by a competitor of ours. If you take a look at the reviews from the following people (click on their name to see both the Nitro *and* the surprisingly glowing countering Scansoft review) I think you'll see it's quite apparent this is the case.

1. Dan Allerbach
2. Chris Malloy
3. kelli wakeman
4. Anthony Alphiso

What I'd suggest you do is download the trial version of each product from the respective websites and let you be the judge on the product. Feel free to contact me directly with any questions, my e-mail address is chris.dahl[at]artspdf.com.

P.S. it's required that you leave a star rating when writing a review on Amazon, so I had no choice but to select 5 stars. What can I say... I love our product!

Regards,
Chris.

Adobe Illustrator CS5 Review

Adobe Illustrator CS5
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a graphics professional and have been using Adobe software for 20 years and this is by far the most amazing suite of tools that they have produced. The upgrades to Illustrator are impressive-Bristle Brush (natural media painting tools that are vector), Perspective Grid, Shape Builder, enhanced Artboards, and more. I am already using all of these features to great benefit in my workflow. I've also used the new Blender Brushes in Photoshop which are very nice and I have played with Content Aware Fill and have been stunned by how well it works. It puts a lot of power into the hands of even casual users of the application. If you have any reservations simply go to their site and download a 30 day trial version and test some of these great new features.

Product Description:
Create distinctive designs for any project. Used by creative professionals worldwide, Adobe Illustrator CS5 software provides precision and power. Paint expressively with vectors, draw in perspective, and explore designing for interactivity. Move easily between Illustrator, other Adobe products, and Adobe CS Live online services. Get the job done efficiently but beautifully, moving quickly from multiple ideas to multiple outputs with complete control and delivering exactly what you had in mind.

The new perspective drawing tools in Illustrator provide a powerful way to create an accurate cityscape with as much architectural interest and decorative detail as you could ever want.

Explore new paths with the essential vector tool

Sophisticated vector drawing controls
Create distinctive designs with precise shape-building tools, fluid and painterly brushes, and advanced path controls. Such powerful drawing capabilities provide practically infinite possibilities for creating unique and striking artwork.
Advanced typography
Enjoy easy type creation and professional control with more than 80 OpenType fonts, paragraph and character styles, paragraph composition, underlining and strikethroughs, transparent effects, and more.
Gradients and transparency
Interact with gradients directly on your object, defining the dimension of elliptical gradients, editing colors, and adjusting opacity. Control the transparency of individual colors in a gradient, including those applied to a gradient mesh.
Perspective Drawing
Use perspective grids to draw shapes and scenes in accurate 1-, 2-, or 3-point linear perspective. Create the look of realistic depth and distance with snap-to guides to quickly put objects, live text, and symbols into perspective.
Beautiful Strokes
Adjust stroke width interactively using new width handles. Precisely position arrowheads and symmetrically align dashes. Control stretch at any point when scaling art brushes on a path, and see how patterns behave beautifully at corners.
Multiple artboards
Work on up to 100 artboards of varying sizes in one file, organized and viewed the way you want--overlapping or on a grid. Quickly add, delete, reorder, and name. Save, export, and print artboards independently or together.
Work interactively with stroke widths, using your cursor to adjust sides independently. Move and edit swells and constrictions freely along the path, and save profiles for later use.
New brush options enable full control of how your brush shapes scale and transform.Click to enlarge.
The Bristle Brush can be used in a variety of ways. You can paint traditionally or you can brush along text shapes to create scrubby or soft-edged type. This text logo works perfectly on the web or on a billboard because it's all purely vector.
In-panel appearance editing
Edit object characteristics directly in the Appearance panel, eliminating the need to open fill, stroke, or effects panels. Work with shared attributes and toggle individual attribute display for faster rendering.
Drawing enhancements
Work faster with everyday tools. Draw behind, disregarding stacking order. Draw or place an image inside, instantly creating a clipping mask. Join paths with one keystroke, see ruler origins at the upper left, and scale symbols with 9-slice control.
Crisp graphics for web and mobile devices
Create vector objects precisely on the file's pixel grid for delivering pixel-aligned artwork. Generate clean, sharp raster graphics by turning on Align To Pixel Grid and using text anti-aliasing options for individual text frames.
Integration with Adobe CS Review
Create and share--from within Illustrator--online reviews for clients and colleagues down the hall or around the world. Publish your review to the web and see comments in Illustrator so you can track feedback on specific design elements.
Integration with Adobe design applications
Share files smoothly with other Adobe professional design applications and easily create artwork for multiple outputs. Work across products and across media with roundtrip editing and user interface similarities among Adobe Creative Suite tools.
Adobe PDF file creation tools
Create protected, graphic-rich PDF files with Illustrator layers retained, multiple artboards for multiple pages, and color space and transparency handling. Include printer's marks and bleeds to share files confidently with service providers and with ultimate prepress control.
Industry-standard graphic file format support
Work with almost any type of graphic file--including PDF, EPS, FXG, Photoshop (PSD), TIFF, GIF, JPEG, SWF, SVG, DWG, DXF, and more.

Top new features of Adobe Illustrator CS5

Perspective drawing
Use perspective grids to draw shapes and scenes in accurate 1-, 2-, and 3-point linear perspectives. The new Perspective Grid tool allows you to turn on a grid that supports drawing directly on planes of true perspective. The new Perspective Selection tool allows objects to be moved, scaled, duplicated, and transformed dynamically in perspective. Easily move and duplicate objects from one plane to another.
You can also create objects in flat space and then apply them to a perspective plane, where they will correctly transform in shape. This works particularly well with symbols, in that you can place easily reapeatable instances onto the perspective grid and see the symbols "in back" recede to give you the look of realistic depth and distance. You can use the perspective grid to resize objects; you can even work with live text in perspective.
No longer do you need to construct your own perspective environment--no more creating your own horizon lines and vanishing points. You can even use the perspective grid to draw vector objects on top of a reference photograph or video still placed on your artboard. Consider adding a series of street lamps to a cityscape for a sequential lighting animation, for example. Or add fence posts to a reference landscape image to complete your billboard for a western wilderness camp.
Beautiful strokes
In Illustrator CS5, a number of new features have been introduced that make designing with strokes even more powerful and flexible. The core drawing tools within Illustrator merit attention every software release, and with Illustrator CS5 there are five significant updates that new and long-time users will appreciate. You can finely control stroke width, dashes, arrowheads, and how brushes stretch along a path. And improvements in corner handling mean that stroke shapes behave predictably in tight angles or around sharp points.

Variable-width strokes--Draw strokes with variable widths that you can quickly and smoothly adjust at any point, symmetrically or along either side. You can create custom width profiles that you can save and subsequently apply to any stroke.
Dashed line control--Control alignment of dashes on a stroke. Now enjoy symmetrical dashes around corners and at the ends of open paths, with lengths adjusted automatically to fit. Toggle between adjusted and preserved dashes and gaps.
Precise arrowheads--Work in a completely new way with arrowheads. Pick an arrowhead shape and control placement and scaling from within the Stroke panel. You can even choose whether to lock the tip or base of the arrowhead to the path endpoint.
Stretch control for brushes--Define how art and pattern brushes scale along a path. Choose areas of the brush graphic you wish to stretch and those you wish to keep in proportion. For example, you may need to elongate the middle of a banner graphic while keeping the detailed, curly ends of the banner from stretching.
Brushes with corner control--Apply art and pattern brushes to a path and get clean results, even at tight bends or corners. Where strokes of different widths join, or they form obtuse or acute angles, choose options to properly fill points where joins occur.

Zoom in to see the pixel grid and watch your objects align as you work. Align To Pixel Grid ensures that when you save artwork as a raster image, the results will be crisp and clean.
Name and reoder artboards using a dedicated Artboards panel. The new Rearrange Artboards dialog box allows you to arrange artboards quickly and easily. Click to enlarge.
You can quickly create a photo mask out of any object. Simply select a text object, choose Draw Inside, and then choose File > Place.
Bristle Brush
Paint with vectors that resemble real-world brush strokes. The new Bristle Brush provides breakthrough control of painting. You can set bristle characteristics such as size, length, thickness, and stiffness. Set brush shape and bristle density. And set paint opacity, which uses transparency variations to simulate lifelike blending. When you have chosen the perfect characteristics for your Bristle Brush, you can save it for later use.
With the Bristle Brush you can achieve the expressiveness of natural media like watercolors and oils--but with the scalability and editability of vectors. Get the most out of the Bristle Brush using a tablet with a Wacom 6D Art Pen, which responds automatically to pressure, bearing, and tilt, plus provides 360-degree barrel rotation and anaccurate brush preview.
Crisp graphics for web and mobile devices
Create vector objects precisely on the file's pixel grid for delivering pixel-aligned artwork. When you're designing artwork for Flash Catalyst, Adobe Flash Professional software, and Adobe Dreamweaver® software, it's critical that raster images look sharp, especially standard web graphics at 72ppi resolution. Pixel alignment is also useful for video resolution rasterization control. And in Illustrator CS5, new web graphics tools include type enhancements. Choose one of four text anti-aliasing options for each of your Illustrator text frames.
Pixel grid alignment
Generate clean, sharp raster graphics by turning on Align To Pixel Grid. Objects are automatically nudged to the closest pixel edge when you create them or apply transformations. Now, a one-pixel stroke won't straddle two pixels and get blurred or lost with anti-aliasing. Zoom in to see the grid and watch your objects align as you work. The alignment control is located in the Transform panel.
Text anti-aliasing
Create readable text for the web, mobile devices, handsets, gaming devices, or any destination where you need to generate raster images from your Illustrator artwork. Four anti-aliasing options now appear in the Illustrator CS5 Character panel. Choose among Sharp, Crisp, Strong, and Smooth, which match the text anti-aliasing rules in Adobe Photoshop® software. You can apply a different rule to each text frame in your artwork, and your specifications are saved with the file.
Multiple artboards enhancements
The multiple artboards feature introduced in Illustrator CS4 is now markedly better. Work on up to 100 artboards of varying sizes all in one document, organized and viewed the way you want. New and greatly expanded artboard options in Illustrator CS5 include a full Artboards panel, in which you can name and reorder artboards. Quickly add, delete, and duplicate them using panel controls or keyboard shortcuts.
Artboards are also easier to arrange, aligned to a grid if you wish, with rows and columns you define. New ruler behavior includes automatic top-left origin, and the options for saving your artwork now include saving one, all, or a range of individual artboards as individual AI files. The advantage of multiple artboards is that you can work on a variety of related projects in a single file and share settings and content across designs. For different outputs, you can choose among a variety of preset ratios and guides, such as for print or web design. You can create artboards to mock up aspect ratios such as an HDTV screen, a movie theater screen, or the screen of a mobile device, exploring ways to adapt your composition for each of them.
You can also create an artboard inside an artboard to serve as a crop area so it's easy to export just a piece of a composition. Save, export, and print artboards independently or together--as a series of files or as a single, multipage PDF file.
Shape Builder tool
Intuitively combine, edit, and fill shapes on your artboard. Drag the cursor across overlapping shapes and paths to create new objects and add color without accessing multiple tools and panels. Quickly unite, exclude, trim, and more.
If you have ever worked with the Pathfinder panel, you will appreciate the Shape Builder tool. It enables merging objects, breaking overlapping shapes into distinct objects, subtracting areas, and more. For example, you can draw a stroke across a the middle of a circle and quickly create two half-circles--no need to open a panel or choose another tool.
Coloring fills and strokes is easier now, too. The Shape Builder tool includes interactive color selection for quickly filling closed or partially closed areas of your artwork. Options include automatic gap detection and choosing whether or not to automatically fill new shapes.
Drawing enhancements
Work faster with everyday tools. Improvements to familiar drawing tools make using Illustrator CS5 efficient and productive. Instant masking using Draw Inside mode and joining paths with a keystroke are just two of the enhancements that speed up your routine tasks.

Draw behind and inside--Draw behind other objects without choosing layers or worrying about stacking order. Draw or place an image inside a shape, including live text. The draw inside feature automatically creates a clipping mask from the selected object.
Find Draw Behind and Draw Inside modes at the bottom of the toolbar. Select an object, choose a mode; then, when you draw, place an image, or create a shape, your new element is behind the selected object. With Draw Inside, the selected object will also become a mask.
Symbols--New 9-slice scaling in Illustrator and registration point control make symbols more powerful than ever. Scaling an object with 9-slice control enables proportion maintenance in exactly the places you want it, now available in Illustrator and not just for export. Repeat extremely complex symbols and maintain ultimate control while you scale and transform them in Illustrator.
Artboard ruler origin and coordinates--No longer think twice about your coordinates. Artboard ruler origins and coordinate systems are now oriented from the upper left. If you have scripts that use a previous coordinate system, they will still work correctly. You can also choose to work with a global ruler that provides coordinates across all your artboards, or you can work with local, artboard-specific rulers.
Path join--Join open paths in a single keystroke with objects selected. You no longer need to select endpoints, and you can join more than one path at a time. Simply select two or more open paths and press Command+J (Mac) or Ctrl+J (Windows) to see your paths join into one open path.
Select behind--Use a keyboard shortcut to easily select an individual object located behind other objects. Press Command (Mac) or Ctrl (Windows) when you select the object that's in the back.

Roundtrip editing with Adobe Flash Catalyst CS5
Use Illustrator CS5 for interaction design, now enabled by new Adobe Flash Catalyst CS5, available in Adobe Creative Suite 5 Design Premium, Web Premium, Production Premium, and Master Collection. Develop your ideas and design your interface in Illustrator, creating screen layouts and individual elements such as logos and button graphics. Then open your artwork in Flash Catalyst and add actions and interactive components there--without writing code.
After you've added interactivity to your designs, you can still make edits and design changes directly within Illustrator. From Flash Catalyst, simply choose Modify > Edit In Adobe Illustrator CS5 and the artwork opens, ready to edit, in Illustrator. For example, you can edit the look of interactive button states in Illustrator while seeing that the structure you added in Flash Catalyst is maintained.
Resolution-independent effects
See raster effects such as drop shadows, blurs, and textures maintain a consistent appearance across media. Have you ever found that your artwork mysteriously loses its smooth, high-quality look when you publish? You can now create work for different types of output and know that popular raster effects maintain an ideal appearance no matter how your resolution settings change--from print to web to video. You can even go up to a higher resolution. Work quickly and efficiently with low-resolution artwork and then scale up when you're ready to go to a finished output such as high-quality print.
Integration with Adobe CS Review
Illustrator CS5 integrates with Adobe CS Review, one of several new CS Live online services. With Adobe CS Review, you can create and share online reviews for clients and colleagues down the hall or around the world. From within Illustrator CS5, publish a review of your work to the web. Multiple reviewers can then access your review from a browser without any additional software and make comments right in their browser window with easy-to-use annotation tools.

Adobe InDesign CS2 Classroom in a Book Review

Adobe InDesign CS2 Classroom in a Book
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been learning Adobe's applications via their Classroom In A Book series. I find there is just nothing better out there. After all it is the official training program from Adobe written by Adobe experts - what else is there to say! The book itself is made of quality paper and is beautifully layed out. They give text and graphics ample space on each page, nothing is cramped and everything is arranged in a logical order. The instructions are precise and given in small enough steps with lots of graphics and pictures along the way so you won't get lost. In fact, each chapter is easy and interesting to follow and it helps that the projects are beautifully designed layouts. You'll create magazine pages, newsletter pages, a restaurant menu, a CD insert etc. that you look forward to finish and that will leave you inspired. Some chapters encourage you to also "Explore On Your Own" and each chapter features a review and answers section to test your aquired knowledge. Maybe you have to revisit some of the earlier chapters because you may have forgotten some details once you've been plugging away for a while, but that simply speaks for the volume you will have to absorb since InDesign is afterall a complex application. Having said that, everybody should feel very confident to use and further explore InDesign upon completion of the book. It includes a CD with 15 lessons and Quicktime tutorial movies.

If you have been sceptical to learn by yourself, this book will make it easy!

This game has serious potentional, but it crashes too much. I have the latest video card and no other game I have ever played before has this many problems. It has outstanding graphics, but even on minimal settings, it still crashes before a battle or during one. I would be careful before buying this one. Find someone who owns one first and try it on your computer and see if it works first. I am both a simutaltion and strategic game fan, this one has them both, but I am putting this one on the self until the designers update it and make a few patches. So buyers beware. see if you can rent or borrow first.

Oxford Dictionary of Quotations Fifth Edition Review

Oxford Dictionary of Quotations Fifth Edition
Average Reviews:

I am off to Africa, the Taita foothills below Kilimanjaro, where I plan to spend a year or two working on a novel. Can't be lugging my Bartlett's, so I opted for Oxford Quotations on CD. Install it to the hard drive, or onto a flash drive, along with Mr. Webster and the Rand McNally World Atlas and a few other choice references.

Then I discover that Oxford Quotations must be online. Online? I won't even have electricity. I'll be recharging spare laptop batteries by solar panel. Transferring the reference CDs to a flash drive was intended to minimize battery consumption. If there was anything in the marketing material about the quotations being online only, I certainly didn't see it. I thought I was buying a CD of Oxford Quotations, not a CD that simply installs a program for searching for quotes online. I already have an online quote reference, and it is called Google.

This CD is worthless to me.

Text Twist / What Word (Mac) Review

Text Twist / What Word
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What Word looks a bit like boggle, but don't shake the monitor. :-)
You're given a board of 5 rows by 5 columns - 25 letters. Some letters have a brighter glow, making them worth more points - this is a random occurance. On the right panel is a list of words and their point values, below that are the words you must complete before you run out of turns (depending on the number of letters you've used) and below that is a super "what" word that can only be completed by making words with special orange tiles.
Challenging and addictive!
Text Twist is almost like Hangman on steroids. You're given jumbled letters and you try to get as many words as you can. You can click a button to randomly shuffle your letters over and over again to re-order them to see if it stimulates your brain into spotting new words. You can play an untimed mode in which you have to find all possible words, or a timed mode in which you have to find the longest word to survive, and all other words are bonus points.
You can use your mouse, but an easier method is to just type out the word and hit enter. Easy and fun - and a great way to speed up your typing skills!
If you played Wordtris before, but got bored - this is the next level and you won't get burned out!

Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Special Media Edition Upgrade Review

Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Special Media Edition Upgrade
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My installation of Office for Mac 2008 upgrade moved along smoothly. I was concerned at first about whether the installer would remove my previous version of Office (Office 2004), since there was no message displayed, but the prompt did come later. The installer did not remove my previous Office Open XML converter, however; and of course I needed to remove the old aliases in the Dock (which were now non-functional). The installer was kind enough to add new icons to the Dock, however.

The upgrade software found my previous version (Office 2004) promptly, and didn't hassle me with product activation, which I was glad for. It also stored duplicate fonts in a separate folder and told me where that folder was located, rather than just overwriting or deleting them - another politeness.

The printed "Install Guide" that was included with the package, however, was pretty well a waste of paper and a no-brainer, as it offered nothing above and beyond what the average user would already know; i.e. stick in the disc and follow the instructions. I was pleased, however, that Microsoft trimmed down the packaging - Office 2004 was shipped in a huge and bulky plastic bubble case, with a hard-shell plastic CD case inside of that, and all wrapped with more plastic, whereas Office 2008's more modest paperback-sized lightweight box shows more environmentally-friendly (and space-saving) thinking.

It goes without saying that a full install of Office 2008 for Mac does require 1.1GB of hard drive space and a DVD drive, as opposed to the 630MB/CD-ROM install requirements of Office 2004. (These MS apps are really packing on the pounds...)

As for Expression Media, which is an image and photo management app that is bundled with this upgrade set, the installer worked fine, but the app was not added to the Dock, and I had to find it myself in the Applications folder. Expression Media asked me to import my iPhoto library as an Expression Media catalog, but the photos were not imported and I heard several hundred Mac warning sounds (seriously) that indicated the operation was unsuccessful. Expression Media didn't seem to understand what was going on, and thought that the photos had been catalogued, which they were not. (Admittedly, not a good first impression.)

Upon opening the Project Gallery, I found that Office had forgotten my recently used Office files, unfortunately. I also had to manually change the default application that runs the new .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx formats as well. I suppose that this is a non-intrusive decision on the part of Microsoft, but it is a bit time-consuming to make the changes.

Running Office 2008 on a Mac mini (Intel Core Duo 2GhHz, 2GB of RAM) under OS X Tiger, I found that the overall performance of the Office apps are noticeably faster than Office 2004, which ran under Rosetta on Intel Macs. Startup time for each Office 2008 app is very good, and response times are generally snappy. The font menu, for instance, used to take considerable time to display all of the dozens and dozens of fonts I have installed, but Office 2008 now fairly well breezes through them.

The compatibility checker, which verifies and addresses possible problems in using PowerPoint presentations across the various PowerPoint platforms (Mac and Windows) and versions (97-2008), is thorough, if not time-consuming.

As Office is such a detailed program, and there are so many people from all walks of life who use its individual applications, it's hard to say in one go what the possible benefits and disadvantages of moving up to Office 2008 for Mac would be. The "My Day" floating calendar and task management tool, for instance, might be useful for people who want a PDA-like approach to desktop time management. I upgraded to Office 2008 this time because (1) the cost was inexpensive, and (2) I was getting tired of using the Office Open XML converter each time I wanted to open an Office 2007 for Windows file in Office 2004.However, for the user who just needs to create a few bread-and-butter documents, bang out some basic spreadsheets, or draw up a simple product or school presentation to show to an audience, there may not be a compelling reason to move up to Office 2008. In short: if you're happy with what you have, then why change it? (And why would you be here, if you weren't thinking of upgrading? ;-) )

This having been said, I can see that Microsoft's Mac BU has been hard at work on this, and it was about time for an upgrade. (I would recommend also checking out special offers for this upgrade product on the Mactopia site as well.) As for Expression Media, however, if you already use Adobe Bridge or iPhoto, you may not find much added value in Microsoft's Expression Media, although concept-wise they do differ, and Expression Media clearly has some strong points (the ability to catalog and preview media without actually moving it into a library, for instance).

All said, it's safe to say that Microsoft Office 2008 is a product to grow on.

Adobe InDesign CS2 Review

Adobe InDesign CS2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Adobe has totally re-done the interface to streamline it and make it cleaner from versions prior to CS.If you are a QuarkXpress user, you'll find that in InDesign CS2, you get the feeling that it is laid out in a logical and easy-to-use manner. The tools and tool palettes are where you'd expect them to be in the menu structure and on the screen.Small touches like being able to save your workspace, like you can do in Photoshop CS2, are great.

I tested the integration between InDesign CS2 and some of its counterparts in the Adobe Creative Suite Premium.I created different graphics in Photoshop CS2 and Illustrator CS2 and I found it was really easy to import them into InDesign CS2 and use.You can effects like drop shadows and feathering to images directly in InDesign CS2.No need to go to another program. With the Control Palette you can also resize objects too. This palette functions with Transform and Stroke features for graphics, and it includes paragraph, character and table features for text editing. What the palette does is affected by the type of selection you have made - either graphic or text.

I imported some formatted text in from Microsoft Word 2003 and two different tables in from Microsoft Excel 2003.I was concerned how the tables would appear after the import from Microsoft Excel. The tables imported easily. With InDesign CS2, you can now automatically style Microsoft Word files on import by mapping Word styles to InDesign CS2 styles as well.

An issue for a long time has been how to preview or view other types of files that you want to incorporate with InDesign CS2.Now, Adobe "bridges" that gap.Bridge now comes as a part of InDesign CS2 and the Premium Suite. So, viewing any Adobe-type formatted file or standard graphic format is easy to do.Using the same interface between the different programs is a help as well.Adobe Bridge is a standalone program.

Being a Web Designer and using Adobe (formerly Macromedia) Dreamweaver 8, I was familiar with using Snippets. These are portions of code you can save for use in other programs or you can export them to give to someone else. Now,InDesign CS2 offers this Snippet capability. You can export objects as snippets. These objects can be shared or reused in other documents. Simply place or drag a snippet into a layout, andInDesign re-creates the original objects, their formatting, and their relative positioning on the page.No more wasted time redesigning, just to get something you have brought in from another document to fit.

InDesign CS2 also now has an Info palette that is just like those found in Photoshop and Illustrator.Size dimensions and resolution are immediately available by selecting the graphic and simply glancing over to the Info palette. This is a crucial tool when fitting graphics in a specifically space-limited area. It's important to know the actual dimensions with which you are working.

Sometimes in designing and re-designing printed work, you have to move objects. When this happens, your structure can often change in different ways.InDesign CS2 helps you maintain your layout by allowing you to anchor your callouts, pull quotes, margin notes, and graphics to text. You can now precisely control the positioning of Anchored Objects, apply text wrap settings, and more.

As with other Adobe products, it is very easy to export your finished work in PDF format.InDesign CS2 works so well at exporting to PDF, it even maintains the layers in Acrobat 7.You can pre-define your Acrobat export settings as well.InDesign CS2 also supports specialty PDF formats like PDF/X-1a and PDF/X-3, which are used in workflows. It also supports high-resolution CMYK output and color-managed workflows.

If you are familiar with previous versions of InDesign, the upgrade to the new version is easy.InDesign CS2 is even backwards compatible CS.You will find that your learning curve is greatly decreased.

Outline 4D Review

Outline 4D
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The back of the software box describes the program as "the most powerful way to outline, plan, and present your ideas....lets you brainstorm, create structure, and organize your ideas....timeline format that is vastly superior to index cards...." They had me at "index cards." Having previously organized my tasks for an art retrospective spanning several decades on (mostly) color-coded index cards, it was not an experience I wanted to repeat so an organizational structure software with the extra added bonuses of timeline and color-coding features was exactly what I thought I wanted.

Facing a similar project again and starting almost from scratch, I wanted some sort of outline structure in which I could organize my thoughts and prioritize my tasks over the two-year planning period. Having tried to do this before using Excel, Access, Word, and index cards, I wanted a more coordinated approach.

I could tell from the screenshots that screenplays were one possible application. What I didn't realize was that, this software apparently assumes that writers are the only people who need to structure and organize ideas that flow sequentially and in a timeline. Anyone involved in planning public events or complex extended projects, also needs this type of framework.

This seems to be a software written for right-brained (creative) people by left-brained (technical) people. (I'm really not sure how that combination will work out.) Being predominantly left-brained myself, I enjoyed playing with the program even after concluding I would probably not be able to bend it to my will. I attempted to use the most general of the many templates provided for jump starting a project ("4-Level Outline" and "Brainstorming".) Even these templates assume you have scenes and characters. Using "User Defined" seems most likely possibility but also an incredibly complex immersion into a program that is sufficiently complex already.

But, in the process, I've noticed the following:

*The learning curve for the program, while not difficult, is cumbersome. It doesn't resemble any program that I'm familiar with, such as those from Microsoft Office or Adobe Creative Suite.

*Using the templates as a starting point, you start with a certain structure you just have to fill and modify. Defining a structure from scratch, however, is a major production.

*There is plenty of help available and a multitude of videos demonstrating specific steps and processes but it seems to me that, until the writer masters the program, he'll have forgotten what he was going to write before he can figure out how to enter it. This seems like an inevitable part of the learning curve.

*You might want to go to you-tube and look up some of these videos to see if they go along with your needs or your way of working. I wish I had.

*Some menu items and keyboard shortcuts are familiar (such as file>save or the keyboard shortcut "control + S" and all the copy, paste, select all functions.)But the "Event", "Tools", and "Window" menus are foreign territories, and learning shortcuts like "Promote = alt+shift+left arrow"will take a lot of initial effort and memorizing.

*The program is really designed to use with keyboard shortcuts (all of which are provided along with the menu items).

*The program is, as the title implies, for outlining and creating structure, scene descriptions, purpose and innuendo, keeping track of the character's actions, etc.--but NOT for actually writing out dialog, production details, set design or setting descriptions, or directorial notes. Presumably, you do all that in another program.

*You can import text from other programsbut the only fairly-common file extension for importing is RTF ( Rich Text Format, which is available from Word under the "save as" option.) You can also export, but I'm not sure to where.

*The program is endlessly editable. You start with only the most basic idea outlineand eventually flesh it out in the most agonizingly precise detail. You can insert, delete, move anything you want anywhere you want to put it and the timeline is automatically updated to reflect that.

*The timeline function seems to be linked to the heading or upper parts of the hierarchy of events. This is mostly things like act and sequence (or scene or chapter) names and numbers.

*The same color coding that appears in the text section (your text) will appear in the corresponding spot on the timeline.

*The text flows vertically, the timeline flows horizontally.

*It helps to have a big monitor to show all this.

*There are templates provided for plays, screenplays, commercials, novels, etc.

*There are examples provided about how a completed screenplay or book would look to help you pattern your work accordingly. I'm assuming that, since the person studying these examples is familiar with what the finished product was (like the various Star War episodes are laid out in excruciating detail) this in-depth visual reference can be very helpful.

*In addition to the color coding in the text and the timeline, there is a small vertical bar that shows color coded graphical representation of the structure that is being constructed.

*The program assumes that you think in the same hierarchical structure that it thinks, however, there are preferences that can be set by the user to bring the program more in line with his own vision or workflow.

*It doesn't seem applicable for academic publications requiring footnotes. You have to be able to structure your writing into levels such as Chapter/Section orAct/Sequence/Scene.If you can do that, the program can accommodate whatever length or complexity you wish to throw at it.

A last note: The program is supposed to run on Windows 7. I was unable to install it and there is a problem that could not be resolved by reinstalling or checking online. I have a virtual XP mode within W7 Pro, and it installed and ran fine there.

Despite the fact that, for me, it's probably a no-go, I'm still very impressed with the program.

Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 Review

Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Lets face it, Adobe Photoshop sets the standard for photo editing, but it's not in most people's price range. The latest version of Photoshop is between six and ten times more expensive Than Corel Paint Shop Pro PHOTO X2. (Wow, what a horrendously long and annoying name.) Photo X2 (as I'll call it from now on) approaches Photoshop in complete feature richness and with a decent interface, yet at a fraction of the price.

Notice I said "feature richness" in describing Photo X2.If you are a relative beginner or you don't retouch your photos in certain ways, I'd actually recommend Photoshop Elements over Photo X2.Elements has a better interface, more "automagic" features and works faster than Photo X2 and is about the same price.

I've used Photoshop, Elements, Corel Photo Paint and also JASC Paint Shop Pro (and some other things, too). So why didn't I buy the latest version of Elements or Photoshop instead?

1. Photoshop is too expensive for me to justify for my personal and hobby use. I use it at my work for image editing since my workplace pays for the software license there. But when I'm paying I'm looking more closely at price vs. performance.Though Photoshop has the performance, it doesn't rate so well on the price scale.

2. Elements is really nice for me to use about 85% of the time, but then there is the horrible 15% of the time that I want to use a feature that Adobe has gutted out of their software for the "Elements" version. Then I have to play around with copying the image into another program (some of them free) to adjust the curves (or whatever) and then copy it back in afterwards. The gutted feature set of Elements is a large, though occasional, annoyance.Plus I really don't use most of the fluffy side of its feature set (like "quick fixes," or "photo creations").

I think for people like me, Photo X2 is a better choice because it gives most of the advanced features that Adobe guts out of Elements at the same price point. These would be features like a curves dialog, batch processing, creating/saving masks (and many more).

Photo X2 has a lot of good sides. It can do a lot.It produces high quality results. It is much more feature rich than Elements. It has very good help files. It even has some nifty unexpected features built-in like HDR image mapping and RAW file support for many digital SLR cameras (including mine).

The down side is that in some places the interface isn't quite as good as Adobe's.It's still pretty usable, but there are minor annoyances. In Photoshop you can zoom/shrink the view and pan an image around while a dialog box is open so you can see the results easily and in a large preview. In Photo X2, you can't zoom in/out and move things around except in the before/after view in the dialogs themselves (not a deal-breaker, but a little bothersome). The startup time and image processing time seem to be slightly slower than in Photoshop, also. Many issues are minor, but they make the product feel a little less polished than Photoshop or Elements.

At least one reviewer has complained about long install and startup times.I noticed the long install time. And my initial startup after installing was 30 seconds or more. After the first time (and a computer reboot), my startup time for Photo X2 was about 8 seconds, which isn't bad. After, loading and closing it and then reopening it in the same Windows session, the loading time was on the order of 2-3 seconds.I don't find these times to be a problem at all, but if you're worried about the performance on your system you might want to download the 30-day fully functional trial from Corel's web site (though it is a 300 MB download or something). It might also be useful to download it to take a look at the features and get a feel for the program if you've never used it before.

In the end, Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 is good software that is feature rich and a good choice for medium to advanced-level users who have outgrown Photoshop Elements and can't justify spending 6 to 10 times the price to buy Adobe Photoshop.

OmniPage 16 by Nuance for PC Review

OmniPage 16 by Nuance for PC

I have been a long time user of OmniPage, going way back to version 4. I have regularly updated every 2 years or so, often enjoying the speed or work flow improvements.

I upgraded to OmniPage 16 via an email solicitation and decided to buy it. Unfortunately after a successful install, registration, and activation, the software would not run. The splash screen would display, and then the program would end.

At this point I come face to face with Nuance support and realize I should have read the support for this product before buying. I could find nothing in the online Knowledge Base forum related to my problem. Phone support is a toll call, and requires long periods of hold, and costs $19.95 per incident (with the first one free). Email support is $9.95 per incident.

Luckily the phone support was able to solve my problem in about an hour. I had to install and run some special snooping software which gathered my system information which I mailed to the support team. Unfortunately, I have now used up my one free incident and won't pursue some of the other bugs I see. Be sure you are comfortable with this limited software support before buying.

Deep Fritz 8 Review

Deep Fritz 8
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
deep fritz is a great program for playing chess. it is not the best though.
for most people the ordinary fritz8 will run faster and it costs less--you do not have a motive to spend so much money on this software unless you already use a specialized computer system with dual cpus(like two xeon chips instead of a single pentium4, eg.). otherwise the extra coding in the software for the second cpu will actually slow down playing performance strength by at least 2-5% on a single processor system.
if you want the best chess playing program consider purchasing shredder8 or deep junior8 from the same publisher because either of these two have beaten deep fritz8 in world computer championships and have a different opening book than fritz does so you will enjoy another style of play.
this is the golden age of chess software. you have many glorious choices to savour-- i do not believe any choice is really bad. but don't spend too much money in the mistaken belief that you are getting 'the best and only' software to have because that sets up disappointment and unreal expectations from a machine.
use the money that you save to buy endgame tables or extra opening books for your chess engine if computer performance is your central issue. otherwise consider purchasing chess training and teaching software to learn tactics well-- you will see a marked improvement in your playing strength and purchase satisfaction if you choose this course.
